Southern pacific rattlesnake
Crotalus oreganus helleri
hypodermix
Family: Viperidae
Genus: Crotalus
Species: C. helleri
Sub species: C. oreganus helleri
Ive been studying these guys locally for a long time, I have
a few comments about them
Venom:
Ok these guys are nasty in the sense they they hybridize.
For a specimen that I aquired in the mountain ranges has
a venom that was less than expected. when striking a live
mouse, typically 4-6 seconds before seizures are apparent
on the beach side of the state I have noticed quite the
opposite, mice envenomated from this species typically
convulse within 2-3 seconds mind you the snakes are on
a hot load and feed bi-monthly Both specimens were
roughly same size and weight when this test was given. at
the same altitude and same temperatures/humidity.
I have seen some info here and there about these guys
carying mojave toxins, and this was come as no supprise
to me as we do have some C. scutulatus up north, the
specimens I have collected beach side are greenish in tint
have have more aggresive nostril scales. These are the
ones that drop mice in a matter of 2-3 seconds
