HELP FL VENOM UNIT
We need to step up to the plate and help, as it may be our own lives we are helping in the long run!
The Venom Response guys are facing serious budgetary crisis and we need to step up to the plate and let everyone involved in the decision making process know that they are a stellar example of how things SHOULD be done, and that their impact is felt FAR outside of the FL borders.
The job these guys do is second to no one, the importance is critical and a program like this should be copied and duplicated, not cut back, weakened or hampered.
PLEASE show your support for the program and the work they do by contacting the list below, RESPECTFULLY, PROFESSIONALLY.
Thank you for your efforts,
-Riley

Dear Concerned Citizens, 14 July, 2009
This letter is being sent to you to enlist your help and support in keeping the Venom Response Team from Miami Dade Fire Rescue alive, and able to provide community services and assist you in the event of an emergency.
As you are probably aware, MDFR’s Venom Response Team maintains the largest, most comprehensive, antivenom bank in the United States. We are currently available for emergency responses on a 24/7 basis and can deploy and deliver antivenom quickly throughout the State of Florida and beyond. Additionally, we respond to over 400 Africanized Bee calls a year (mitigating the situation if possible), as well as animal rescue calls in our county. We also provide community outreach, Envenomation Management and Africanized Bee Response Training for other agencies and “Dangerous Critters” education for many schools, public gatherings and private groups.
Budget cuts in our department are threatening our unit and our response capabilities. We could easily be cut back to skeleton staffing, which will eliminate many services and significantly slow our response times. We are doing everything we can to prevent these cuts but we need YOUR help!
Please take a moment to e-mail or call the Mayor’s Office and Miami Dade County Commissioners listed below and let them know how our program is important to you, your company, clients, or group. Our response and education area is not limited to Dade County so your voices need to be heard to let the Commissioners know that you do care and don’t want Venom Response to be dismantled.Their meeting to decide on cuts is upcoming July 21, 2009, please make your voices heard before that date.
Our services are important to many, in and out of the Dade County area, and we want to continue to be here for you. Today our unit’s life is in your hands. Please feel free to forward this to any of your contacts. The more voices they hear the better! Thank you in advance for your support and assistance.
Best Regards,
MDFR Venom Response Team – 786-331-4444 mdfrantivenom@miamidade.gov

Venomous
Hi. I am interested in helping anyone with their venomous collection. Essentially, I would like to gain some experience in dealing with hots before I keep them myself. I have experience in keeping and breeding boids, especially ATBs. I have also assisted in the keeping of an EDB as well. If you are anywhere around the Charlotte, NC or Rock Hill, SC area and need any help, please let me know. I would appreciate any experience and am a hard worker. Thanks!

New Law in Effect to Ban Exotic Reptiles. Urgent P
Anyone with pet fish, birds, reptiles, or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Any company selling product or services for pet fish, birds, reptiles or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Would you be impacted by “The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act”?
• Virtually all fish in an aquarium are not native to the United States
• Most pet birds are species not native to the US
• Most reptiles kept as pets are not native to the US
• Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and ferrets are not native to the US
This bill would ban nonnative species not specifically approved by US Fish & Wildlife Service. AND, it does NOT only ban their importation, it also bans sales, transportation and breeding of these animals
• If you own a bird or reptile, and your specialized veterinarian is located across the state line from your home, you would be prohibited from taking your pet to its veterinarian
• If you own two fish and they have babies, you would be in violation of this law and your pets could be confiscated and destroyed
• Don’t plan on moving to another state with your pet. Crossing state lines with your hamster, fish, bird, snake or other nonnative animal will be illegal
ANY animal except dogs, cats and goldfish will need to go through a costly, extensive study to prove they will not cause harm AND be approved by the US Fish and Wildlife Service before they can be pets. The proposed congressional ban on “nonnative species” will affect hundreds of millions of animals currently kept as pets.
PIJAC supports managing invasive species, but this bill is not the answer
. Simply enhancing and improving existing laws and regulations would meet the goal of preventing/minimizing the introduction of potentially invasive species.
Under HR669, ANY animal not native to the U.S. would have to be placed on an “Approved” list created by the Fish and Wildlife Service, which does not have the manpower or financial resources to do it
. Nonnative species includes virtually every bird, reptile, fish, and small mammal commonly kept as pets. Until an animal is placed on the “Approved” list, you would be banned from adopting, purchasing, selling, transporting across state lines, or breeding these animals.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Pet owners and the pet industry needs to be heard NOW
• Contact members of the subcommittee – both in Washington, DC AND in their district offices. Let them know you don’t want them to ban your pets
• Attend your representatives Town Hall meeting during the Congressional Spring Break (April 6-17) and ask them WHY THEY WANT TO TAKE AWAY YOUR PETS
• Alert everyone you know and ask them to stand up and be counted.
• Become a member of PIJAC and help us defeat this bill (www.pijac.org)

Vipera ammodytes
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me with some info regarding how sale of snake venom for research/med purposes is done. And more importantly where. Currently, I have an increasing amount of Vipera ammodytes (Bulgarian Viper) venom I'd like to sell but have no idea where. And whether I need some sort of a license for this purpose.
Any help/information on the subject would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Experienced keepers/Herpers in NC
I'm looking to start on venomous pretty soon (copperhead) and I was wondering if there were any experienced keepers in the mid NC area that can help me gain some experience and knowledge. I don't want to rush into it and do anything I will regret. I've been trying to learn as much about them before I start so now I need some tips on handling, caging, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also I'm very interested in working with some crocodilians so just let me know.
