I can't really remember exactly when my fascination (obsession?) with reptiles began. I was probably around 4 or 5, and it probably began with my mom and dad's absolute fear of all snakes. I was allowed to keep all kinds of pets as a kid, but never a snake. Maybe that's what initially held my attraction to them, the 'forbidden fruit,' so to speak. Of course, like any kid, I did it anyway. Since we lived out in the country, I was pretty easily able to catch and keep all kinds of snakes in the barns and trailers we had in the fields. Usually they were only garters, kings, and racers. I got *a lot* of practice with racers, and I attribute my current handling abilities to that. Of course my abilities have evolved a huge amount since then, but that helped to get me used to fast moving, bitey snakes. Later down the road, starting when I was around 13 or 14, I began looking for native venomous here and there. Pickings were usually pretty slim, but occasionally I'd catch a copperhead or cottonmouth. I never kept any of these for an incredibly long time, for obvious reasons. When I was 17 or 18 (by this time only my mom and I lived in our house), she decided to move out and in with her boyfriend, so I began to build a collection in a spare bedroom. After a year or two keeping various colubrds, boas, and pythons, I decided to take the plunge and get my first long-term hot. Having always been a huge fan of elapids and never really caring for viperids much, I decided on a neonate spectacled cobra. Whether this was a good idea or not is subjective, and unfortunately I was sent a newborn snake that had probably never fed and decided to refuse any kind of food I offered her. After that was all said and done, I moved on, but it certainly set the tone for my hot keeping time. Now, at 22, I have decided to get out of keeping hots for various reasons, and may take it back up again one day. For now though, I'm happy with my giant constrictors.

I was 25 when I started working and collecting rattlesnakes and copperheads. But I was 4 when I got my first reptiles. My dad got me a jewel curlytail and a baby yellow ratsnake.. Hooked ever since. I got into hots when my wife left me for another guy. Weird huh?? Anyways, everyone have a great day.
