I was wondering if anyone out there knows of any way to "test out" on a venomous license? Many of you may be aware that according to Florida law,Class II wildlife(dwarf crocodiles, caimen, cougars, etc..)may be kept if one can show documentation of 100 hours practical experience and pass a written test on the animal(s)(in lieu of the 1000 hours normally required) in question.
I currently only have about 50 documented venomous hours and I fully understand that hots require more careful attention in handling and caging as well as medical treatment,etc.. I have roughly 9,000 to 10,000 hours of experience with nonvenomous snakes and was hoping that this would count for something. Except for the above mentioned differences,(as we all know,)hots are cared for in the same manner as their nonvenomous kin. Any help or information along these lines will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. wagler7

The same documented 1000 hours deal applies to the venomous permit as well. Call Tallahassee and request a ven. permit application and it has the requirements listed in the paperwork they send. You need 1000 documented hours with the species for which you are applying, a letter from a local hospital stating they carry antivenin, and they usually come inspect your setup. The application fee is $5.
If you want to exhibit your animals publicly, ie. do educational talks, with them, you also have to post a $1000 bond with the state. Many insurance companies will write one, they cost $50-$100.
Good luck and expect to be checked over very closely, they don't like to give out hot permits.
The more paperwork you can give them on the 1000 hours, the more favorable they seem to look at apps.
Good Luck!

I am trying to get a proposal ready for the state asking them to offer the 100hrs plus test for hots. Ven herps are only class 3 animals so they should offer the test option but as we all know they are prejudice when it comes to herps. For example I can sell a deadly arachnid to anyone over 18 here in FL but technically you need a hot permit to buy a harmless rear-fanged snake like Langaha. Is this right? When I asked the officer in charge of inspections he responded positively.

Yeah, the law sucks. didjano that the new permits are $100 annually? talk about taking a bite! and what exactly will this 1000 bond do? most antivenin treatments enter into the 20000+ range...does it cover the first injection? or just the call to the antivenin bank? or is it to cover the states ass incase your permit gets someone bit by your snake? someone should really get a group to start a protest, or a "strike" not to play with puns, back at the state to make these laws a bit more herp friendly. I mean, copperhead, poisonous, yes. deadly? no. why in the heck do I need to prove A 1000 hours to get one for $50? then pay 100 bucks per year? here's a thought, go to Georgia, buy native hots (their legal to own there, and bring em back!) Another fun fact, in Indiana, they don't require permits for any hots at all....Why in the state that has the most reptiles is it so hard to actually appreciate them?
