Silly question from venomous snake enthusiast! I've seen a gentleman milk a green mamba on Discovery Channel before, but was wondering if anybody has ever milked a black mamba or is it just to deadly?

Black Mambas are milked all the time. They have to be milked in order to collect the venom for antivenin production. One documentary that comes to mind is "Snakebite" which airs quite frequently on Discovery and Animal Planet. In this documentary, Mark O'Shea joins a South African herpetologist in search of black mambas from different localities to see if there is any significant difference in the venom. They milk a black mamba in the field. This is a great show, and it includes footage of O'Shea taking a double hit from a side stabbing stilletto snake. One of the assistants on the project is bitten by a mamba and has to be rushed to the hospital. I have this show on tape, email me at copperhead8814@yahoo.com and I will try to get you a copy made.

Talked with O'Shea about the stillheto snake that got him. What you don't see on film is that it got him more than twice. Five times if I remember correctly. He said it was very painful and caused a lot af halucination.
Just an interesting bit of triva that I thought would be neat to share.

I worked at Fitzsimons Snake Park in Durban,South Africa. The cost on the east of south africa is notorious for both green and black mambas. We would catch problem animals during the summer, often catching as many as 10 big black mambas in residential areas. As a result there was a demand for a Black Mamba demonstrations and a gentleman by the name of Clyde Farr did demos with big black mambas. They did not last long as the logistics behind it and the possiblity for disaster for the public was out weighing the educational purposes. But,that just shows mambas can be handled safely, even big blacks.Milking of a black is the same as milking of a green, just more stressful on both animal and keeper. The gentleman who milks for the South African Institute for Medical Research(Producers of SAIMR Polyvalent and SAIMR Monovalent serums) is called Mike Perry and he milks big blacks (as well as a host of other endemic venomous snakes)on a regular basis with out much incident.
