I am a pharmacy student working on first aid protocols for snake bites at our local zoo. I am having trouble locating information on these 2 snakes. I know that no anti-venom is available. Is that because one is not needed as their venom is not that dangerous to humans? Also need information on any supportive treatment for the victim once envenomation has occurred. If you have any resources that I can refer to in addition to the knowledge that you yourself can provide me, I would appreciate any help!

If you can get your hands on a cpy of Dangerous Snakes of Africa (Spawls/Branch, 1995) You will see detailed bite protocals on both species. As far as antivenom, production for both Atractaspis and Thelotornis is not cost effective, especially with virtually no legitimate bites from the later. (A legit bite being a bite which did not occure as a result of handeling the snake.) You might also check www.kingsnake.com/toxinology for some infoor a link to SAVP or something.

Hi, i am from south africa! The main reason why there is'nt anti-venom for twig snakes here in SA is because VERRY FEW peaple get bitten by them!!!! It costs allot of money to make the serum in the labs and all serums have expiery dates. It wont make sense to spend allot of money on serum, that will go bad or never be used!!
If one gets bitten by one of these snakes, you would receive a poli-valent anti venom, wich is a blend of different types of anti-venom from different snakes!!!!! The twig snakes bite causes death from internal bleeding!!
Asp's can give painfull bites, but there have been no deaths recorded yet!!I hope i've helped you a bitt.

Hi Breezer,
Which Polyvalent are you reffering to? Is there some cross-reactivity or are actual Thelotornis and Atractaspis venoms used int he polyvalent's production?
Cheers

hi Roger
I'm not sure wich polyvalent is used. I almost think that it has got something to do with boomslang venom.
I will get more info on this by the experts at the snake park i might be working at. Twig snakes are rare here in SA ,but they are found at the upper-northern border of south africa, just like the gaboon viper. But boomslangs, rinkhals, puff adders and cape cobras are common here. That is why i'm not sure wich polyvalent is used!!!

The reason that I ask is that so far as I knew, the SAVP polyvalent did not cover Atractaspis. SAVP's Dispholidus typus av is a monovalent, and Spawls/Branch specifically state that there is no cross-reactivity for a Thelotornis bite. If this is changed, I'd like to know about it.

Hey breezer,
I just checked, Atractaspis venom contains several vasoconstrictors (Sarafotoxins) which are genera specific. I suspect that there are other componants which are also endemic to the genus.
If there's new info out there, I'd like to know about it.
Cheers

Hey, no worries bro. We all started out somewhere and we all made a few goofs, said a few things that were wrong, and whatever. Don't sweat it. Learn from it and be the better man for it. Melissa, who origionally posted the question, emailed me after your initial response on this forum. As I didn't have all of my literature with me, and could not give her a complete answer, I recomended her to BGF and his website, www.kingsnake.com/toxinology. He sent her the information that she was looking for.
Regarding your response, the most up-to-date information that I had was, as I said earlier. I was just curious if I had missed some update in AV.
Hey, no problem with being young either. i'm only 22 myself. I want to do venom research, eventually.
Cheers
