I found a 8-9 inch snake on my front sidewalk the other night that looked like a copperhead but it did not have the distinctive yellowish tail that the younger snakes have. The pattern was joined like a copperhead but I was not able to see the pupils of its eyes to see if they were round or vertical.
What other snakes in Georgia have the same brown coloration and same joined pattern? Also, at what length do the copperheads start to lose the discolored tail?

Did the Georgia resident ever identify that copper-colored snake? My neighbor finds these in her garden, and is worried they may be venomous. I do not think so, and would like to allay her fears. The snakes are always 7-8" long, do not have a spear-shaped head. No change in the plates from the pre- to the post-anal areas. I neglected to look at the eyes. Can you help me identify this snake? Or direct me to a good ID web site? I appreciate anyones and everyones help. Thank you---TOM

Sounds like a Banded Watersnake (Nerodia fasciata). Is there a pond or stream near by?

I looked up some pictures of the Banded Watersnake and it is not even close. The pattern on this snake connected just like a copperhead and had the same coloring. The only mistake I made was not paying attention to the shape of the head and eyes.
Does anyone know what snakes in Georgia resemble the Copperhead in pattern and color? Or better yet, in the event is was a Copperhead, at what length do they lose the yellow tail?
Also, I have not seen this snake since the one encounter. Assuming there is adequate food, do they stay in the same area or do they move from place to place? What are snakes normal traveling patterns?

It probably is a copperhead. i have found them without the green tail, and the lack of pupil was probably due to a bright light.
