I just saw a story on FOX News about a keeper that was bitten by his "pet" cobra in St. Louis. No anti-venom. I've been preaching personal responsibility all year... and now this. I feel like I'm having a nightmare. Does anyone know the details of this story? Would it have been as dramatic if he had access to his own AV?
Happy New Year!?

Thanks Al. The local news covered the story much more responsibly than FOX did. They even mention at the end of the story how rare an occurance it actually is to have someone be bitten like that. At FOX they scoffed at the fact that anyone would be "allowed" to have a cobra... that they must be acting criminally... and certainly were operating w/o the benefit of all their faculties.
I just want to know who has the authority to "allow" or disallow something like that...the state I guess. I thought FOX was an advocate of minimal government intrusion into private life. I guess that is the case unless the anchors happen to have a phobia or can't see why someone would want to work with something like a cobra.
I get the same thing during hurricane season when the anchors and meteorologist get so upset that someone like me wants to paddle out into big surf. Apparently I shouldn't be "allowed" to go against their superior sensibilities. What does it have to do with them? But I guess their inate superiority is how they got on TV in the first place.
Happy New Year,
Andrew

Interesting points Andrew. I would never paddle out into high surf as I consider it a good way to become dead. However, if someone wants surf in that, I say go for it if your comfortable with the risks involved.

I'm not trying to step on any toes here, but if you're looking for real, accountable, and dare I say it(?), fair and balanced news reporting, Fox is certainly NOT the place to look. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that they would blow this story out of proportion. I too am curious as to the actual circumstances surrounding the bite, as I know a couple of guys in that area that keep or at least kept species like the one mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised to see if one of them was the one in the story.

Well FOX is as biased as the rest of them. Most are biased to the left, FOX to the right. What is unfortunate is that people of all political persuasions are so quick to condemn what they don't understand. Much to my chagrin it seems that reptiles, as well as other interests of mine, are at the top of the misunderstood list. All you can do is make your case sincerely, support it with the facts, and point out stereotypes and urban myth for what they are. It makes me crazy sometimes.
Chance I hope it wasn't your friend that was bitten. I will be praying for the young man. Let me know if you find out any more details... by the way I checked your website... way cool stuff bro!
