I am looking for a place to look around while in Indiana. Anyone suggest a place to start looking for kings, hogs and ratsnakes? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

Evansville is still in Hill Country. There is a Nature Preserve there the "Wesselman Woods NP" in Evansville. Off of Stockwell and 62. Remember that's just to look. If you are collecting then you'll need to look around for areas away from that protected property but there are plenty of areas along that Ohio River system that turn up those species with frequency. The Heterodon, Lampropeltus, and Pantherophis are active in April but usually much more active after the first of May in Indiana. Daytime searching between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm yield the best results as they are usually basking this time of year. Tin and old foundations are also quite productive this time of year, especially for those species. I'd look for them to still not have strayed far from hibernation spots at higher elevations with SW exposures.
Keep in mind that Indiana had strict laws governing the collection of their native wildlife so you will need to be spot on target with what you are doing. I can tell you first hand that the local DNR in that state is active and not overly sympathetic to those breaking wildlife laws (and rightly so), so be sure you do your homework before going out. Good luck and enjoy. Please be responsible as I hold a real regard for that State having grown up herping there. I'd hate to see it squeezed dry.

Doug,
Thanks for the advise. I did check with DNR and have to buy a license to collect where legal. The license will allow the posession of just non-protected fauna and there is a limit also which I feel is fair. I grew up in Ohio and know what you mean by people persecuting the State. I am mainly on a "look see" trip to visit friends but would love to stumble across a few snakes I do not get to see here in Florida. The Northern Pine being one of them. Our Pines (southern) are protected by law here in Fla. The Western Pigmy is also a snake I would love to see as we cross through Kentucky, but chances are slim. Doug I noticed you posted here and mentioned Larry Lemon's name. He knows my wife and I. Please tell him hello for me. Glad to see he is in a great place now. Thanks,
Paul

I'll let Larry know you said hi.
Yeah Larry's been a tremendous asset to the zoo since coming on (and his odd sense of humor is a perfect fit).
As for the pine snakes, you won't see those in that part of Indiana, but the others you should be able to locate with some regularity.
