No permit is required for native venomous in Alabama, however, they "MUST" be native to Alabama. The permit system established last July (I believe) is merely a grandfather clause. It allows you to keep what you have for the life of "THAT" snake. You may never obtain more if they are not native to Alabama. If you didn't already own it, you cannot get a permit to obtain it. In other words, they wrote the law so that in 20 to 25 years (when all existing exotics should be dead), there will not be any "LEGAL" exotic venomous in this state. I got rid of my C. Atrox rather than be burdened with obtaining the permit which would have been null and void the day the snake died. I obtained this info directly from Gene Houston, Assistant Chief, Enforcement Section of the AL DCNR

I don't care what laws those communists created, I wouldn't get rid of squat, and let any politician run my life. Every man is free and has the right to the lands resouces without anyone trying to controll him. Its one thing when your protecting from over collecting, but anything else is dictatorship!!!!

I agree entirely, but I've been quite busy lately with calls about snakes (mostly cottonmouths), that it really wasn't worth the trouble. I normally don't keep a collection anymore, I just had the Atrox because I always wanted one (I enjoyed his "Attitude"). But the "Law" really sucks.
