i live on the northern ky/west virginia line.(huntington) i know i have never seen a snake this late in the year.
he has a old nose injury but, other than that is in great condition.it also has been eating for it took a really big dump in my car.i could not leave him for fear of being killed or not making it to his den.i will return him in the spring.
all input appreciated.

I saw a Black Racer out chasing Brown Anoles at 1300 this afternoon in Jacksonville, Florida. I have seen snakes in every month of the year in St Marys, Georgia.

I've seen garters cruising around in January/February in the Chicago area during brief Indian Summer spells (when we get a few days that reach in the 50's and bright sun). So, yes, it isn't unheard of to see herps out when you least expect it.

If it is a speckled king snake then it is an escape. We only have black kingsnakes native to our region. Our radio tracked kings, copperheads and timbers have all been found out in all months as long as the temps were in the 50's.

If it gets up to high 40's or low 50's it would be ok to release it where you found it. Tomorrow is suppose to be warmer then today but I would not count on it.

My first solo "publication" was a natural history note (in HR) when I found a living (though torpid) cottonmouth on a COLD December day. It slithered off into the COLD water. It returned a couple of days later.
