ok, i have a problem...i went down to my snake room today to do some cleaning, and i noticed that my eastern gaboon has a swollen eye. it wasnt like that yesterday. theres no blood, looks like clear liquid. havent fed it in the last week or so, couldnt have been injured during feeding. this is my first time seeing this problem, so i am a little freaked out. has anyone delt with this? and, what was the cause. please only give advice if you know what the problem is. thanks, Danny

I wouldn't know what the problem is without seeing it but it sounds like some kind of infection so if there is no vet that deals with venomous in your area then I would find a way to get some penicillian in him. I go to Tractor supply and by it in liquid form which you can then use a 3 cc suringe and inject 1/2 cc 3 times a week for two weeks. It will only help and the antibiotic will not hurt it in any way.

have you done this? the snake is in shed right now, could it be somewhat related to this? i was thinking that maybe i should wait until it sheds and see if the problem rights itself. you are right, i dont have a vet asnywhere near me that would deal with venomous snakes. i think there is a tractor supply around me somewhere though, i will have to look that up.where is the best place to inject a snake? i dont want to do more damage than good...Danny

actully now that i looked more closely at my snake the whole head is a little swollen, but its mostly in the right eye. i have a tractor supply about 30 miles from my house. looks like it will only be about 15.00 to get the medication you suggested. just need a little more info though.wheres the best place to inject? how deep? and is the dose you suggest the right amount?..Danny

This generally indicates a blockage in the drainage from the eye. This normally drains into the mouth. The eye, since it is encapsulated with a scale (a clear one) holds fluid. When this drainage area becomes clogged the fluid has no where to go. A buildup will occur. Bitis seem to be somewhat more prone to this than other snakes? The blockage needs to be corrected, the causeative agent needs to be identified and corrected. Some Vet books recommend cutting a pie shaped area out of the eye cap to let the fluid drain. This requires multiple doses daily of an optical ointment.
Unless you have a Veterinarian who works on Venomous I have to say, don't worry about it. As either procedure will be a major precursor to an envenomation. So A/V access is a serious must have!
You really don't want to go muckin around inside a Gaboons mouth unless it has been put to sleep.
Find a Vet and the issue is fairly easy to correct.
Cheers,
T-

i am thinking that i should wait until it sheds to see if maybe the fluid is built up between the old eyecap and the new one. i have the antibiotics and seringe, but i am going to wait a few days to go that route. she should shed within a day or so.Danny
