Taiwan-made snake antivenin exported to U.S.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said hursday that it has recently received orders from the U.S. State of lorida for four kinds of antivenin to combat snakebite.
The CDC under the Cabinet-level Department of Health said the rders, from the Miami Fire Department, are for antivenin for nvenomation by various well-known venomous snakes, including the ussell's viper and the banded krait.
As the orders were for four kinds of antivenin, each totaling 20 oses, the CDC has invited private companies to undertake the roduction of the total 80 doses of antivenin, with the CDC supplying he development know-how, CDC officials said.
According to the CDC, the agency has received more than 20 orders ince 2003 from the United States, the United Kingdom, the etherlands and Israel for antivenin, with sales totaling nearly NT$3 illion (US$90,909).
The CDC quoted World Health Organization statistics as indicating hat about 125,000 people die from snake envenomation worldwide each ear, while only 22 pharmaceutical companies from 17 countries are apable of producing antivenin.
