I am at the end stages of making my 3 story 30"x12"x18" caging system, and I have a few questions about the lighing.
Is it safe to have the light bulb exposed like in these cages?(http://www.venomousreptiles.org/libraries/showfilepage/5738?offset=82)
Or should I do something like this and make a wire mesh thing around the bulb to make it unaccessable to the snakes?
Or does anyone have their own solution to the whole lighting/heating problem?
I'll post pictures when it is done.
Thanks,
Jon Short

Europeans have been using exposed bulbs for decades...me, I get real nervous about exposed bulbs - even an incidental bump can prove harmful. I would recommend a wire mesh shield. Better yet, consider a pro product radiant heat panel that can be mounted to the inside roof of the cage - best heating device on the market.

The bulbs in those pictures appear to be compact flourescents. Not necessarily great heat producers.
I, personally, would never put a bulb inside a cage.
Too many things could go wrong.
1. It makes it difficult to clean and disinfect the cage.
2. The snake could accidentally break the bulb and then be exposed to broken glass or even worse - live filaments.
It just doesn't seem worth it to me.

I have the cage made, but not ready to set up. I'll set a picture as my profile picture. I'll get more pictures when I set it up.

It has some stuff in it to hold the linoleum down while the glue is drying. But you get the picture. The floor of the top cage is about 55" from the ground.

Now days, thee is no need to use an actual bulb in a cage as a heating element.
The new stick on, under the aquarium / terrarium heating pads can be used "inside" of cages, provided that they are covered by a layer of gravel or shavings, or, even news papers.
I know they say to use them under a cage only, but I cut off the plug, and snake the wire from inside the cage through a tiny hole to the outside, and then put on one of those crimp on plugs, and plug that into a thermostat.
Then that hot plastic heater provides a great basking place the snake can use if it wants to. If the snake does not sit on it, it is probably too hot.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards
