I PURCHASED A AKISTRODON CONTORTRIX PICTAGASTER(TRANSPECOS/ SOUTHERN COPPERHEAD) LAST FALL. I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING, BUT IT WILL NOT EAT. I FEEL UNCOMFORATABLE TRYING TO FORCE FEED DUE TO ITS SMALL SIZE. I DON'T WANT TO JUST LET IT DIE SO I WAS WONDERING IF RELEASING IT IN NC WOULD HAVE ANY ILL EFFECTS SINCE PICTAGASTER IS NATIVE TO TX.

DON'T DO IT!!!
It will not survive. And in the unlikely event that it does, it might carry pathnogens (sp?) into the wild populations. This is hard sayin's, but it would be better to euthanize it than release it.
How small is it? Have you tried teasing it?
Ok, put the snake in a quiet, dimly lighted room and leave it alone for a couple of days. Give it a flat hide, like a plastic leaf or a bit of carpet. Then introduce a prey item and leave at once. Check back in an hour or so and see if it's eaten. If it doesn't cooperate, leave it alone for another day or so, then try again. This time, after an unsuccessful hour or so, take away the hide, then take the item in hemoststes and tap the snake's tail until you get a strike on it. Then drop the prey, put back the hide, and leave. And keep trying.
I have recently adopted a pair of pictigastor (adult)and I find them to be very fussy, shy, and nervous. You must have great patience to deal with these, especally an neonate.
If all fails, try and find a home for it. I live in NC and will help, although I don't really want another snake.
luck,
f

Agreed Filth. A very horrible idea. If you want to give it away I would be more then happy to take him off your hands. I live up in VA and will come to get him if you want. Just dont release it. I have experience with copperheads(1.1 A.c.mokasen) and will give him a good home.
Contact me at The_Taipan78@hotmail.com and we can try to arrange something.
Later,
Jeremy

thanks great info. I just don't have much hope any more. I have tried pinkies, frogs, fish, frogs and fish rubbed on pinkies, pinky heads split open, putting snake in smaller cage with food and heat cranked up, and last but not least tease feeding and now that they are in season catipillars. The only thing I haven't tried is force feeding and the snake is too small for me to feel like I can get a good solid grip. i ToO LIVE IN NC NEAR Charlotte and will be attending the raleigh show but I am beginning to become doubtful.

Don't worry I wasn't going to blindly release it without proper research. I'm just at a point where I want to cover all options and they seem to be running short. He has survived the winter and still appears healthy, but to the best of my knowledge he has never eaten in his life.

Good deal. Thanks, Jeremy. I REALLY don't want another snake. Gots too many, now. Indeed, I find myself living in an atmosphere of venom. Pleasant enough, but.......
I have recently discovered that pictigastor is a lot more flighty than mokasen. I'm uncertain if I can ever publicly present mine. The way it stands now, I'm keeping them strictly for my own enjoyment and unless they settle down considerably, that's the way it'll stay. They are the most beautiful of the Coppers IMHO.
wishing Ian luck, and if that fails, hoping for success for you.

Ian, I will be at the Raleigh show on Sat. morning, probably hanging out at the Iguana Rescue table. I have a white beard, beer belly, am a little crippled and will be walking with a cane. I'll be wearing a grey Coelecanth Rescue Mission tee. If you have no success with the snake, I'll take it then.
Hey Jeremy,
If you can't make Raleigh and it comes to pass that I get the snake, we'll hook up on it.

Hey Phil,
Unfortuently I wont be able to attend the show because I have to save all of my pennies for Hamburg but if Ian does decided to give him up to you, I will definately come and take him off your hands.
Your going up to Hamburg right? Maybe you could bring him up with you(depending on the condition of the animal and if you think the drive would be too stressfull). If not, then I can always come and pick up the little worm. Always looking for excuses to drive down to NC:-)Let me know what works best for you and thanks for your help on this.
Take care Filthy.
