Hello,
Has anyone had any success making home-made snake hooks? I looked at the steel bars to do it with in the hardware store, and they cost about $2.50 a piece-a far cry from the upwards of $50 most companies want for theirs. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Hi K,
I've always made my own, starting with a ground and filed down golf putter.
I make my field hooks from 3/8'', mild steel, round stock. You'll have to heat it to get the bends just right. I mount it in a drilled-out, sawed-off rake handle, epoxyed and pinned so it can't come loose. Done right, this thing can compare with a backhoe.
My cage hooks are a little different. They are doubled-up, 3/32 " stainless TIG wire, bent to shape and stuck in a broom handle in the same way as the field hook. It can be spread or narrowed depending on the size of the snake it has to support. It also makes a fairly good, emergency jigger. My neonate hook is the just a piece of 1/8 " brazing rod on a handle.
Get all of your metal at a weld or machine shop. You'll be using basically scrap and they might give it to you.
Easier'n falling off a log.

I bought 3 golf clubs at a used sporting goods store called Play It Again Sports. They were $3.99 each and different lengths. The heads came off easily with a propane torch, they were just on with epoxy.I had bought a 3 ft.length of steel rod at the hardware store, and cut it and bent it to shape. The best way to bend it is to heat it up with the torch.I also had a small tube bender that is used for bending brake lines for cars that came in handy.(any auto parts store for a couple of bucks.)Then I brazed the hook into the end of the golf club shaft. If you've never brazed you'll need a differant torch with MAPP gas.Propane won't get hot enough.Or most any local welding shops would probably do it pretty cheap.Mine work great and I've made several for freinds too.Total cost for me was about 5 or 6 bucks apiece, and I'll put them up against any $30.00, $40.00,or $50.00 hook out there. Hope this helped.
