I just read Venomous Snakes Of The World by W.P. Mara. I was slightly confused by his taxonomy for the Eyelash viper. I was under the assumtion that it was a member of Atheris, Atheris ceratophora to be specific. Mara describes it as Bothrops schlegeli. Which is it?!
If one or more of you folks more knowledgable than me, (you folks know who you are Chris, Derek, etc.), could you please lay some of the wisdom on me. LOL!
Thanks,
Vanyul

Hi Vanyual,
Heres a little more info regarding B.schelegelii about a split of the species. This info comes from Wolfgang Wuster's site, "Venomous Snake Systematics Alert".
"Solórzano et al. (1998) investigated geographic variation in Bothriechis schlegelii in Costa Rica. On the basis of apparently consistent colour pattern and scalation differences, they conclude that the populations from southwestern Costa Rica (Valle del General and parts of Puntarenas Province) represent a different species, Bothriechis supraciliaris. The medical significance of the differentiation between these forms is unknown, but should be taken into account by venom researchers.
Solórzano, A., L.D. Gómez, J. Monge-Nájera, J., & B.I. Crother (1998) Redescription and validation of Bothriechis supraciliaris (Serpentes: Viperidae). Revista de Biología Tropical 46: 453-462."
Hope this helps.
Later,
Jeremy
