Hi Everyone:
I'm reading my new book "Venomous Snakes: Snakes in the Terrarium" by Ludwig Trutnau. It was just translated to english. I will review this excellent book for this site when I'm finished.
He stated in a section about "true spitters" that we are all familiar with that there were occassions when Bitis Gabonica did this too! I read it several times just to be sure, yes, that's what he said.
Has anyone else heard of this?

Thats a new one on me. I have never heard of any other species other than serten Cobras that can spit venom. Well guess anything is posable LOL. If this is true, i wonder if the abilaty would be a danger to keepers? I mean we know that any spiting Cobra such as the Red Spiting Cobra, is dangerous because of this abilaty. If this is true its a new thing on me, never knew that any pitless vipers or any viper for that mater could do such a thing, CRAZZZZYYYYYY huu?.......Happy herping Wally

I don't know about gabby's, but I've had several WDB's "spit venom" while being held. I have this phenominon on tape if anyone wants to see it. It startled me, but maybe it's common and I'm just stupid?

Many species when upset strike with enough force to appear to "Spit venom" The force of the strike and sometimes the meeting of the fangs with an object may cause the venom to be expelled from the mouth. I have seen this in Bitis, Crotalus, Daboia and many of the species that strike with force.

I want to see the tape of the rattlesnake spit its venom ive caught many rattlers mainley westerns and it has never happend to me but i think it would be ausom to see. it there any way i would be abel to view the tape of it?

I'll get a link online tomorrow for you to see. I was holding it behind the head, trying to put it's tail in a bag for a video my friend was shooting for her class project. It began to wildly fling it's fangs out and venom shoots from them a few times. Maybe I was holding it wrong and it was pissed, maybe it's common, anywho, email me at scott.delony@gmail.com and I'll send you a link to that video.

Just a week ago I was hit by a spray of venom when my 3 ft Albino Atrox struck the hook I was trying to put her on.It really threw me for a loop.I might hve to start wearing my spitter mask. :)

Any snake's venom can be expelled. The spitters all have a slight difference in their fangs that allows them to spray venom outward much more efficiently than other snakes. The hollow in the fang takes a bend toward the front of the fang before it exits the fang. Venom leaves the fang at more of a ninety degree angle to the fang than in other snakes. The normal hollow runs straight down the fang, exiting downward near the tip.
