My texas rat snake has what I think is mouth rot from what Im told. Its not that noticable until you look close but around his nostril area it looks to be slightly swelled but not too much and there are some very small brownish scabbing in the area that doesnt look that bad. I was wondering if that is the early stages of mouth rot about to take place? Someone in FL told me it probably was. Any info would help me alot!!!!

Well if it is mouth rot. I would say to get some really strong alcohol like 151 rum which is 75% alcohol. And pour it all in snake's mouth. The snake will be really pissy when you do this but the alcohol will kill any bacteria or fungis that are living in the snakes mouth.

Might just be a mild infection from nose rub. If its mouth rot you should be able to see thick puss inside the mouth around the gums and sinus area. It can be pressed / swabbed out, then flush with hydrogen peroxide. You can give antibiotics as well, such as erythromycin, baytril or even just liquid polysporin drops. The snake will not like this, its basically like root canal.

Geeze Phillip...
You live in the Dark ages of medicine..Maybe we should call you the Dungeon Master.
Use Gentian violet. It has been used for ages by dentists for minor oral pathology. You can get it over the counter at any pharmacy for about $5.
Dip a q-tip and paint the insides of his mouth every other day for a week. It should do the trick.

Al,
Haha, the one thing is that alcohol is to me a little safer on the snake that other things. What if the snake swolled hydrogen peroxide or the medicine. I would rather use something more natural. But hey what works for you is fine.

Phillip:
You are correct...The H2O2 is much more danderous for the snake than the Alcohol...as long as it Ethyl Alcohol.

Of course I mean Ethyl Alcohol. Yeah H2O2 is very dangerous on snakes, so is Rubbing Alcohol. I perfer to use more natural things than just run out to grab medicine anyways. Most of the time the medicines can be a lot more dangerous than natural products.
