I was wondering if all the snake species found on the Florida mainland, also can be found on the islands in the Gulf of Mexico, thinking about for example Caladesi Island, i know that the EDB can be found on many islands, but how about other species?
Enybody with more information?
Thanks, Jan.

I cannot speak with authority as it comes to the islands in general. I believe the special variety is less on those islands. As for Caladesi Island, a biological herp survey has not been taken for a LONG time. The lack of fresh water I think limits the species on Caladesi. The current herp bio list for reptiles on Caladesi is as follows:
Snakes (only 8):
Mangrove water snake
Eastern garter snake
So. black racer
Eastern coachwhip
Yellow rat snake
Eastern king
Florida King
EDB's
Others:
Florida box turtle
Ornate diamondback terrapin
Gopher tortoise
Atlantic green turtle
Atlantic Loggerhead
reef gecko
six-lined racerunner
5-lined skink
Honeymoon Island (just across hurricane pass) has very little fresh water, but I see ribbons pretty often there. (Corns, pygmys, and Indigos are also listed on Honeymoon, but no one has seen an Indigo in decades there). No cottonmouths- it seems they need at least some fresh water?
That's the little I know!

Thank you Bob, i could not find this information on the web, if there is not much fresh water on Caladesi, not many mammals to i think, what food is the EDB eating?
Bob do you see the EDB often in Central Florida?
I can hardly wait till next vacation to Florida,,
Greetings, Jan.

Jan,
I think the EDB's like to feast on rabbits that are somewhat abundant on some of these islands. As for how often I find them, I have spent a fair amount of time looking for EDB's this year in central FL (I am new FL resident), but I have found only two. They are seen often on Caladesi and Honeymoon islands (and other gulf coast islands), but it's obviously hard for me to find one on command.
Good luck!
Bob
