I guess one of the problems I have with the idea is the ``behaves somewhat like a hot snake`` concept.
That ``somewhat`` is what will get you bitten if you think it has prepared you for dealing with the real thing.
To me the behavior of a water snake is nothing like the behavior of a cottonmouth.
And the behavior of a racer or coachwhip is nothing like the behavior of a forest cobra or mamba or tree cobra.
Like Joe said, if you drop a harmless snake on the floor, it is still a harmless snake, and even if it chases you around the room and bites you, it is still a harmless snake.
If a mamba gets out, it will be zooming around the room on top of cages, window ledges, or what ever else it can climb onto. They are extremely fast and agle.
If a forest cobra gets out, it might try to chase you down. Did that coachwhip or racer teach you how to deal with that?
Having a lot of experience with snakes is a good thing, the more the better. Both venomous and non-venomous. But the idea of ``practice`` non-venomous snakes making you prepared for venomous ones, just does not work too well, as they behave differently from the real thing.
Best Regards JohnZ

Well I would say the "training snake" would benefit in learning how to use the tools right. But I do agree there is no way it can possibly get anyone ready. Even worse - it can create a false sense of knowing what to do. That I see more dangerous than being aware of the fact that you do not know how to do it at all.
To get a mentor is the best way to go!
(I know whoever read about my first venomous may think that I'm preaching one thing and doing something else - I did my best to learn as much as I can from people that keep venomous even though I met them after I had the snake)
