i wanna write to alabama legislators about revisiting the laws regarding reptile ownership in alabama.......it would be great to have a permit system in place and give the responsible a chance to keep what they want while discouraging the purchases done on a whim.....any pointers or words of wisdom.....

Ricky: I would use Florida as an Example, tell them that FL has had this kind of Permit System in place for quit some time now, and that it has Cut Down Greatly on the Ragtag Impulse Buying of Exotic and Indigenous Venomous Species. By them doing this, they have been able to Weed Out the Un-Safe Keeping Practices that have been sited in other States.
Only problem is, even with Florida’s Laws being the way they are, it seems to have made it very hard for you to get the Permits Required to Keep Venomous.
Consider this: If we allow the same Laws they use to be Implemented here, we will all have to give our Life History of Keeping and also have to prove that we have had the Hours Needed to Qualify for their Permits. So you see, it could also cause problems this way. I wish we could have a Law Implemented, that would only require about 600 Hours of Experience to get your Permit. To me this would be Perfect.
I know that a lot of you will disagree with my idea of only needing 600 Hours of Experience, but if you take into consideration the Likelihood of Getting Bite in your First Week Working with these Animals. It makes a lot of sense to think a Person could Learn to Keep and Handle Safely in the mater of 25 Days, dose it not? Look at it this way, it only takes a Month for a Truck Driver to get his/her Licence to Drive a CMV and believe me, Driving a 80,000 Lb. Truck, is just as damn Dangerous as Keeping or Handling a Venomous Snake. If you don’t believe this, look up the amount of Road Accidents that were caused by Big Rigs in the past Year, it will boggle your mind. One more note: in probably 70% of these Accidents, the Truck Driver was Killed “I Hate to Say”, but they still only require you to do One Month in a Trucking School “Odd Huu?”

i don't want it to be like florida's because there is still room for improvement there....it shouldn't be a blanket system of any kind either.....there should be a permit system in place for the keeping of any boid that could reach a length of over 8ft and for ALL venomous snakes.....i've heard of a guy who is possibly ONLY keeping rattlesnakes to hide his "stash" in the aquarium with them and that's crazy.....they shouldn't allow just anyone to keep an EDB because that snake can be VERY deadly, proper treatment or not.....they'll have to address the boid and native venomous situations eventually, so why not address them now and instead of a knee jerk reaction, actually set something up that could not only be safe and offer people the chance to keep these amazing animals, but also create a revenue for the state, however small it may be......1 or 2 people could handle cage inspection, considering the number of keepers who could get a permit and the population density of the state.....
i'm going to try and address everything.......just to do something......it could be a big positive for alabama both in terms of civil rights, animal rights and help get rid of the "inbred hillbilly" label.....i'm gonna try the best i can though and hopefully hook up with the right people to help the cause, but bad things are looming and if we're only reactive, then we'll probably lose a lot
i'd love as much help as possible......i was thinking, just 15 years ago, wal-mart sold baby alligators...things have changed too fast and instead of fixing problems, they're just appeasing the crazies and that is not progress

Ricky: I will join you in writing our State Government, in hopes it will pay off. I believe it could work, if we try.
I hope that other Keepers in this State will do the same “If We All Band Together, There’s Nothing We Can’t Do” and that’s a Fact.
PS: I saw the Picture of the Cottonmouth you have in your Profile, it has the Facial Markings of a Full Blooded Eastern Cottonmouth. Makes me wonder how the Ranges are Laid Out here in North Alabama.
