Hello all,
I will be working in the Rupununi savanna region of Roraima, Brazil and Guyana in very remote areas (several days from a hospital) and would like to inquire as to what is the best way to prepare for a venomous snake bite. Bothrops atrox and Crotalus (durissus) ruruima are the most common venomous snakes for the area (although Lachesis and Bothriopsis may be encountered if we work in the forest much). We will not be able to refrigerate anything in the field. My specific questions are:
1) Is it recommended we carry vials of anti-venom, given that allergic reactions can be worse than the bite itself and we are not trained in the medical field
2) Can we first be tested for allergic reactions to see if anti-venom can be administered safely
3) What brand/type of antivenom is recommended for those species - cost is an issue for us.
4) Is there a good source to read on proper administering of the antivenom and monitoring the patient
5) Can/should adrenaline be carried as well?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Joel

I would suggest you get hold of "Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemisphere", by Jonathan Campbell and Bill Lamar - the second volume contains a chapter by Prof. David Warrell that addresses the issues you are raising here.
Cheers,
