I posted on the kingsnake feeder forum asking if anyone had cricket frogs...I want these incase my malayans need scented pinks or even as outright feeders if it becomes unavoidable...And geeeezzz...the frogs rights activists group has jumped all over me because of the thought of feeding such "cute" frogs to snakes. I got everything from I'm destroying the delicate balance of the planet to playing god over who lives and dies....all in the feeder forum..but the same people are feeding prey animals to thier captives.
Now, I do have compasion for the feeders(whatever that may be..rats mice chicks lizards or even other snakes) we use for our animals, but its just a fact that snakes need certain prey(wouldnt it be great if fruit and salads would work) and I only need a few frogs just to get these snakes started(infact I may not need them at all, I was just planing ahead if it be needed) then I can switch them over, of course. I was just rather surprised to have people who are in the feeder forum act so unrationaly...believe me if there was another way to start certain species I'm all for it..I even minimize the number of animals used for scenting, etc by refreezing them and using them several times...
Anyhow, I just thought we could have an intelligent conversation here at shhs and share thoughts on the feeder issue..between herpers

Sierra, you got to do what you got to do. Frogs are in major decline, but there is nothing you can do about that. Maybe in the summer you can let one frog go for every 2 your snakes eat, that way everbody will benefit.

If you have a local heavily vegitated pond, bog, or creek around your house on a sunny day you can catch all you need for feeding or scenting. You will never hurt the balance of the abundant cricket frogs Anyone who thinks a single person collecting for a few snakes really dosn't know much about how this world works. After all if animals and plants were as delicate as some treehuggers think it would have allready been destroyed years ago before conservation ethics were started. Becarefull feeding frogs to snakes. They can carry toxins that can eventually kill your snakes by the build up of hydro carbons stored in fatty tissues especially in snakes that are not native to the local frog populations you are feeding.

I agree with the PIGMAN, although I am glad for some things the tree huggers do , because we wouldn't have the Redwoods if they were not around, but the pigman is right there is no way you can hurt the frog population; might even help it by selective reduction.

Please' don't take me wrong. I am very appreciative for conservation. It's just some extremist are off their rockers and thats what I refer to as treehugers.(those guys are depressing people) I am totaly for saving as much land as all possible through education, but not enforcement.

I live near Pittsburgh and the temps been in the 30's to 50's for the last several weeks, so not much to catch....I'm also receiving some anoles as well. Yea I knew about the possible contamination of chemicals in the frogs, but hopefully I wont even need them or mainly for scenting and I may use a different captive born "cricket-sized" frog...we'll see, the little guys hatched out last Friday....

I read most of the comments at K.S. It is, for the most part, total B.S. I read a lot and watch a lot of educational programs on nature. Is the frog population declining? As I understand it, yes. Frogs, if I understand correctly, are one of natures most accurate indicaters. The slightest change in enviroment can have drastic effects on frogs. Temperature, polution, etc, who knows.... I do not think that herpers feeding WC frogs to their reps could ever have any kind of population reducing effect on them. There aren't that many herpers out there. Many of these pro-frog idiots probably do their laundry and drain it into their yard. Even if they don't, they have the stench of PETA all over them and need to get a life. Feed your new snakes in whatever manner best supports their life and ignore the idiots ranting's....Do I like rats and mice? sure. I feed my reps f/t when possible, but the times i feed live rodents, I sit and watch in awe as the venom takes effect. How can you not, it's nature in the works.
