we r trying to find the real story, too many media conflicting reports, he was not supposed to be in the cage i f protocols were followed...:
media versions:
1: he got out of the cage on his own and collapsed
2: another volunteer removed the cat from him and got him out of the cage
3: he was not in the cage
another report says he had neck puncture wound and crushed vertebra, how woud he get out of the cage on his own like that???
so we r waiting for media hysteria to go away and take it from there.
In any case, somewhat he was out of the cage and alive, and so was the cat, when paramedics arrived, so some emergency protocols were in place after the attack to remove the person (conscious or uncoscious body) without kiling the animal......

Owner: Policy not followed
Associated Press - October 30, 2008 11:55 PM ET
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (AP) - The owner of a Broken Arrow-area wildlife sanctuary says a policy toward access to animals during feedings wasn't followed in the case of a handler who was attacked by a big cat.
Safari's Animal Sanctuary owner Lori Ensign said today she's still trying to piece together what happened when a liger named Rocky gashed Peter Getz shortly before noon yesterday. Ensign says the facility has a strict rule against opening the animal pens during feedings.
Getz suffered wounds to his neck, but was able to escape. He remains hospitalized in critical condition at Saint John Medical Center in Tulsa.
Ensign says Getz is experienced and has volunteered at the sanctuary for about a year and a half. She says he previously worked at the Tulsa Zoo.
Ensign says other volunteers were with Getz during the feeding.
A liger is a human-bred cross between a male lion and a female tiger.
Ensign says state wildlife officials are investigating the incident and will decide whether Rocky will be euthanized.

"weither or not rocky will be euthenized"
See THAT is something that realy ticks me off.
Any time an accident happens like that with an animal such as an exotic cat etc. they usualyw anna try an put it down.
I belive they tried to do teh same thing with sigfreid an roys tiger an the pair told them hell no cuz the tiger was family!
When I could hang around over here at Cohutta springs, they had this georgious male moutain lion there, an when you would vist he would just be the biggest most lovin kitten, but you always had to be ready because at any time he could change. No mater how tame they can seem you you always have to rember that while you can take the cat out athe wild, you can't take the wild out of the cat. An every so often they have a bad day just like we do an we cross that line of saftey etc. an BAM we become a chew toy.
In wellc ared ofr animals it could be as simple as a bad day, or mis reading body lanaguge etc. in abuse cases its often hunger etc. In any case accidents can happen no mater what, just like in keeping venomous snakes. But the animal should not have to pay the price with its life because of it.
The Liger didn't ask to be bred/kept in captivity etc. just as the Venomous snake didn't etc.

Jeff Corwin is an AR moron (well, Animal Planet has H$US all over it).
He admits tigers are in the brink of extinction in the wild, so why is it a bad thing they will survive in captivity. He then turns it against enonlegitimatef private exotic ownership, what does he mean by that, AZA or ban?
And then he wonders where the liger came form, idiot, if u breed exotic cats, u need USDA license, so liger was likely bred in another USDA facility before coming to this Oklahoma place as a baby, since the facility owner admits riding him when he was growing up.

An animal handler with thousands of hours of experience has died after being
mauled by a 1,000-pound lion-tiger hybrid he was feeding at an Oklahoma
animal sanctuary.
Peter Getz, 32, had entered the big catfs enclosure on Wednesday while it
was feeding, a violation of standard procedures. The hybrid cat, called a
liger, bit Getz on the neck and back before other handlers rescued him and
called 911. He was taken to a Tulsa hospital, where he died Thursday night.
A powerful creature
On Friday, Animal Planet host Jeff Corwin told TODAYfs Matt Lauer that Getz
broke the cardinal rule of dealing with large carnivores.
Story <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27469562/#storyContinued#storyContinued>
continues below «
_____
gYoufre talking about an animal that is 20 times more powerful than the
human being that was feeding it,h Corwin explained. gOne of the most
important protocols with these powerful cats in captivity is to never enter
their enclosure with the animal present, especially when it involves food.h
Getz had been a volunteer for more than a year at Safarifs Wildlife
Sanctuary in Broken Arrow, Okla., and reportedly had thousands of hours of
experience dealing with animals at the Tulsa Zoo.
gWe try to have all the procedures in place, but for some reason, they
weren't followed this time,h Lori Ensign, the sanctuaryfs owner, told NBC
affiliate KJRH in Oklahoma. gIn all my years, we've stressed that whatever
you do, you don't open that gate.h
Food is put on a pole that is inserted through the fence to feed the
animals. Itfs deer season in Oklahoma, and Ensign said that the liger may
have been more excited than normal because he was being fed raw venison.
Lion-tiger crossbreed
The liger, a cross between a male lion and female tiger, is named Rocky.
Ensign said the animal was donated to the sanctuary, which houses 200
animals, most of them either rescued or donated. She told KJRH that when
Rocky was growing up, she used to ride him like a horse and that he has a
gentle nature.
But Corwin told Lauer that it doesnft matter how gentle a predator may be.
TODAY
A liger is the product of crossbreeding between a male lion and a female
tiger.
_____
gThis creature could have, by its nature, a very individualistic, nice
personality,h the animal expert said. gBut the truth is, a tiger that
weighs hundreds of pounds only needs to have one bad moment, and one bad
moment can be critical, if not lethal, to a human being.h
It remains unknown why Getz entered the enclosure. An investigation by local
authorities will attempt to determine that, and will decide whether Rocky
should be allowed to live or be put down.
gIn many situations, the animal is destroyed because it has connected in a
negative way and a dangerous way to human beings, and the truth is therefs
an increased opportunity for this animal to become even more dangerous,h
Corwin told Lauer.
Texas tigers
There are other questions behind the story, Corwin went on. gWhat it really
echoes to is a bigger situation, which is keeping these exotics in captivity
for nonlegitimate purposes in the first place,h he said. gThis is a rescue
center, but what is the individual history of that liger? How did it get
there?h
Animal Planetfs Jeff Corwin said that Rocky the liger may have to be put
down.
_____
The animal may have originated in neighboring Texas, which has no laws
regarding the keeping and breeding of big cats. The exact number of big cats
in Texas is unknown, but estimates have put the population of tigers in that
state at between 2,000 and 4,000, which may represent the largest tiger
population in the world.
gIf you went to India today, you would find that there are less tigers
living there than there are in the state of Texas, where the laws and
regulations are incredibly loose,h Corwin said. He added that every year,
gThere are probably 10 people or more that are critically injured, in some
cases killed, by tigers, and itfs happening in our own country.h
Ensign, the park owner, said that her sanctuary has closed since the
accident. She did not say when it might reopen.
The sanctuary is a nonprofit wildlife refuge. All staff members are
volunteers. It is licensed and regulated through the Oklahoma Wildlife
Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is subject to the same
rules as public zoos.

Hopefully Rocky isn't going to be euthanized. And hopefully Peter Getz makes a full recovery. I have been to Safari's a lot and I was getting ready to volunteer there, until this happened and my parents said no.

Animal Planet as an organization is a big supporter of HSUS... all you have to do is watch any program on that channel and count the number of HSUS commercials. Jeff Corwin himself sits on the Board of Directors of Defenders of Wildlife, an HSUS satellite that wrote a report called 'Broken Screens' that attempts to strike fear in the heart of the American public that we are about to be overrun in this country by Exotic Invasive species. It is the basis for the Bill sitting in the US House of Representatives HR6311 that would Ban the Import, Purchase, Sale, Trade and Breeding of Many, Many exotic reptiles; including All Boa, Python and Eunectes. Jeff Corwin is no friend to our community!
