Field herping can be TOUGH. Especially if you are self taught. My biggest suggestion would be to find an experienced field herper and tag along. I have someone in mind, but you need to email me and tell me a little about your background, occupation, age etc. If you have a photo, that would be good too. The reason is simple. This is the internet. As far as I know, you could be a serial killer! Click on my highlighted name "charper" to get an email link. I'll do my best to hook you up.

Hi Cas,
I too, am a self-taught herper who's been flogging the swamps and palmettos, and running the ridges for 50 years, and I know exactly what you're doing wrong. You're in too big a hurry.
You must set a goal for your trips. Decide what you are looking for and have an intimant knowlege of it's habits and habitat.
In short, study, and never get in a hurry. You'll find that sometimes you'll see everything except what you are looking for and other times, you'll come up dry. But often, you'll be rewarded with a trip that you can bore you're friends to dispair with the telling, whilst scratching your mosquito bites.
That's the dues in this club: Study, and take your time.
Wishing luck,
f
