I need to know what a water moccasin looks like from all sides, color, pattern, etc. I live in middle Ga. and think I have a few of them in residence in our creek. I would like to be sure and to educate my children as to what they look like so that they may avoid them.

The cottonmouth or water moccasin :
I would look at the head of the snake it is much larger than that of a water snake and is usually pale on the side in the eastern speicies. They are heavy bodied snake with their tail tapering off like a coke bottle or better a beer bottle with a long neck if you know what I mean .

Hi,
If I may add just a little, the Watersnakes you will see mostly are the Southern and the Redbellied. You also have Queensnakes, which are dark grey with lighter stripes near the belly. Queens have cream colored, labial markings that join the stripe. The Cotton is marked over a much larger cheek area bisected by a brown stripe over the eye and it has no stripe on the body. Also, a Cotton at rest will lie with it's head tipped up. A Cotton's body markings can vary a lot. To the inexperienced eye, younger ones look a lot like Southern Watersnakes except for the much larger head. As the snake ages, it tends to lose much of it's patterns until it is almost black.
May I suggest that you get a good field guide? I reccommend either the Audubon's or the Petersons.
luck,
f

So far you have received some good answers. Just thought that I would add that there are quite a few pictures of Water Moccasins (or Cottonmouths if you prefer, they are the same) in our Photo Album (link on the Navigation Bar on your left). The pictures are in the Crotalidae albums.
Enjoy, Karl

I just want to know what kind of snake we've seen in our yard several times. It is solid black on top and yellow underneath. I've been told that moth balls would keep snakes out of our yard so I'm going to try that.

Did you get a reply telling you how to encourage snakes to leave your yard? I've been told to use moth balls but that doesn't seem to work.
