This was posted on the Kingsnake classifieds by North Texas Reptiles.
"Hey Man, read this and send it to all your herp pals.
This information came from my Pacific Northwest
Exotics newsletter For more information contact
pnwe@effectnet.com
In the newsletter they informed us that AZA ( American
Zoo and Aquarium Association) is planning on
announcing an attempt to ban the ownership of all
exotics nationwide except to members of AZA and TAOS
(The Association of Sanctuaries).
They plan on holding a conference in Washington DC on
May 21 & 22 to formerly announce their plan to ban
private ownership of exotic animals.
It is imperative that we contact AZA by mail, email,
or phone and register our protests about their plan.
There are many thousands of responsible and loving
private owners of exotic animals and we should not be
forced to give up the animals we love or be blocked
when we want to give another exotic animal a loving
and permanant home.
AZA is a powerful group and we need to have our voices
heard in this matter.
Please, everyone contact the AZA offices immediately.
Time is running out to protect our rights as
responsible and caring exotic animal owners!
Aza must realize that there are countless intelligent
and capable private citizens that are devoted to their
exotic pets.
It is important that all exotic animal owners contact
AZA to record their views on this matter. Every letter
counts!
We need to secure our rights as private citizens to
love and care for our precious animals.
Addresses and numbers for the AZA (American Zoo and
Aquarium Association) are listed below. Please waste
no time in contacting them!

I implore *everyone* please write. Let us not let the
efforts of some be in vain such as that happened in
NYC. It mentions *all* exotics,
and has something negative to say about all types,
mammals, birds,
and herps! Please forward this to any and all mailing
lists and message boards you belong to that may find
this of value.
Thank you"

This was posted in reply to the fowarded message above.
"Nothing contained within that email is true, save for the dates of the legislative conference. The AZA does not, nor has ever, had the banning of the private ownerships of exotics on the agenda for the legislative conference.
This is a perfect example of how unsubstantiated rumors and heresay can cause unfounded hysteria."
Sorry for spreading rumors.

Jeremy

No need to apologize Jeremy. The reason that this rumor spread so rapidly is because it seemed entirely plausable- Zoos and aquariums are frequently the recipients of confiscated or unwanted animals from the private sector. I can't say how many times I've heard the response, "I'll just give it to a zoo" by some irresponsible idiot who doesn't have the means to care for his (insert species here) once it reaches maturity.
God only knows what's going to become of the juveile Nile crocs that Bob Clark was pimping to just anyone (including minors) at a recent Arlington Expo. Of the keepers of the few that survive, I wonder how many will say "I'll just donate it to a zoo"?

Hi Ken,
Thanks man and I definately feel your concern. I have a freind who recently picked up two hatchling ingunas(spelling?)and when I asked him what he was going to do with them once they reached 5 to six foot, he merly replied "im going to give em away". Give away an iggy A? good freakin luck! Anyway, I talked him into getting rid of them to someone who will care for em through out their life and convinced him to come with me to the next herp show and get somthing more manageable(like a geko or something)which I will help him with.
I have also seen people selling crocodilians at some of these shows and as a matter of fact, saw 2 16 year old kids at the last hamburg walk out with a cute baby gator. I dont want to imagine whats going to happen to the little/soon to be huge guy once he out grows the house and takes fluffy down in one gulp.
Well Ken, great talking to ya. Thanks for straiting things up.
Take care.
Later,
Jeremy

You know I really can't blame the two 16 year olds for being a little blind and not thinking there purchase through.I would have bought one when I was 16 but you could not get them then so i settled for a caiman. But I can certainly blame the typical sales jerk who would stoop so low as to sell baby aligators to them. Strange how I would have never bought one in my latter years and ended up with one I have today that some dummie friend bought thinking he was going to give it to a zoo. Not....Eric
