'Harmless' snake proves deadly
Friends of a reptile enthusiast who died after being bitten by a snake have expressed their shock that a man who knew snakes so well had been killed by a species generally regarded as harmless.
Ron Siggins, 37, of Pascoe Vale, died yesterday afternoon after being bitten by a whip snake at Harcourt North, 120km north west of Melbourne.
Victoria's community of herpetologists could not believe what had happened to Mr Siggins, who had been around snakes for 30 years.
"He's got bitten by something that would normally just make you feel a bit sick and give you a bit of a headache but he's had a reaction to it.''

Are Smaller Venomous Snakes More Dangerous?
Several times each year someone asks in class about the relative danger of an envenomation from a small versus a large crotaline (aka pit viper). Some people are insistent that smaller snakes are more dangerous. This idea has always felt counterintuitive to me. The explanations seem fanciful at best. Usually, people argue that larger (and therefore older) snakes possess some sort of volume control. They argue that larger snakes hold back venom against humans because we are not food for them. These larger snakes want to warn us with a strike but preserve venom for when it matters, like a meal.

Australia's lizards are venomous too
Australia's not only home to venomous snakes, spiders and jellyfish, now scientists have discovered that its lizards are venomous too.
For instance little bearded dragon lizards that cruise around the suburbs have classic rattlesnake venom, scientists report online today in the journal Nature.
But the venom is not dangerous to humans, says Dr Bryan Fry from the University of Melbourne's Australian Venom Research Unit, who led the international research team.
The lizards don't produce enough venom and what little they do is used to kill prey.
Dr Bryan Fry spent months in the Australian desert and tropics capturing, studying and milking dozens of lizards.
He and his colleagues then studied their toxins, DNA and evolution.

Dry weather has snakes on the slither
Dr. William Hudson, emergency room physician with Holston Valley Medical Center, agrees that snakebites are a rarity at HVMC, and antivenin is rarely used, especially with copperhead bites.
"Most copperhead bites get better without it. There is a fairly high-risk profile by giving antivenin because it has horse serum in it," Hudson said.
"Unless it is a large copperhead that strikes in the face or a vascular area with a good dose of venom, the antivenin is usually not necessary. In those cases, we see a lot of pain, swelling, numbing, nausea and vomiting, and later, some bleeding problems. (yeah Doc, that CroFab has lots of horse serum in it !)

Federal officials say the Mexican garter snake should get protections
A snake species native to Arizona and Mexico is a step closer to being protected under the Endangered Species Act. Biologists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have placed the Mexican garter snake within a cast of species—282 in all—that the agency has deemed worthy of federal protection.(this is interesting, in that Garter Snakes are commonly found in yards, and many get road killed, so, I wonder what enforcement of the law will be like on this animal)

Fougera Marks Sixth Snakebite Season with CroFab Crotalidae Polyvalent Immune Fab (Ovine)
Natural Disasters, Myths and Misconceptions Biggest Concerns for Snakebite Experts
MELVILLE, N.Y., March 20, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Fougera(r) Inc. has marked its sixth season of supplying CroFab(r) Crotalidae Polyvalent Immune Fab (Ovine), the primary antivenom for snakebites from the crotalid snake species common to the United States. The term crotalid is used to describe the Crotalinae subfamily (formerly known as Crotalidae) of venomous snakes that comprise the vast majority of common North American snakes, including rattlesnakes, copperheads and cottonmouths/water moccasins. When CroFab was launched in 2001, it was the first new snakebite antivenom to be made available in nearly 50 years. CroFab is currently the only widely available antivenom for crotalid snakes.

Friends give first aid to save life of Mundubbera taipan victim
A TEEN has survived two bites from one of the world's deadliest snakes thanks to friends who recently completed a first aid course. It was the second time Ryan Cole, 15, of Mundubbera, about 390km northwest of Brisbane, has been bitten by a poisonous snake in a year. Ryan was bitten twice on the foot by a coastal taipan, which has the third most toxic venom of all land snakes, as he jumped into a popular swimming hole in the Burnett River on Sunday. His father, Rob, said nearly a litre of antivenene was pumped into his son to stabilise him. Some had to be rushed by police from Eidsvold and Gayndah hospitals, more than 40km away. "It was just terrible, his eyes were open but no one was home," Mr Cole said.

How Snakes Got Their Fangs
The research suggests that both rear and front fangs in venomous snakes developed from separate teeth-forming tissue at the rear of the mouth — unlike the situation for non-venomous snake dentition and human teeth. This finding, detailed in the July 31 issue of the journal Nature, could explain why snakes flourished beginning some 60 million years ago, geologically soon after non-avian dinosaurs went extinct.

It's scary how easily fears can catch on
I hate snakes, and I taught my children to detest them as well. I imagined — and sometimes dreamed — that this snake would lurk about my home ready to bite, squeeze or eat my family and me alive. Every time I saw a snake in a book, I'd say with a grimace on my face and dread in my voice, "I just hate snakes," as I quickly turned the page. If a snake appeared on TV, I'd instantly turn the channel, saying something like, "I just can't watch that. I'll dream about snakes if I do." Little Fido learns snake avoidance
Arizona has 14 species of rattlesnakes, said dog trainer Web Parton, who teaches dogs to avoid snakes. Snake avoidance training has become more popular every year, said Parton, who has taught it for more than 20 years.
He's joined with fellow dog trainer Jay Smith to head the Humane Society of Southern Arizona's snake avoidance classes this year, offered at its Companions for Life Training Center, 3465 E. Kleindale Road.
The classes have been packed, he said, and the duo train about 40 dogs every weekend.
Cody was one of 10 dogs on hand for a recent Friday night session, which lasts more than two hours and costs $65 per dog.
Veterinarians say the cost to treat a snake bite easily can top $1,000.
"We'll give you our standard line," Parton said to kick off the class. "We are here to traumatize your dog for life."
He said just getting a glimpse of the live rattlesnakes used for the training - Arizona's most common and aggressive Western diamondback - is enough to traumatize some owners.

According to PETA, these animals, whose exotic skins are popularly used in handbags and shoes, are often skinned alive, and suffer for hours or even days before dying. (Although I do not like to see crocodiles and snakes used for leather, the PETA folks are lying again about the animals being skinned alive).

The snake can slowly move through small pockets in a collapsed building to find trapped survivors, or work its way through pipes to find something as mundane as a blockage.

Poisonous snake man of Papua New Guinea
David Williams clambered over a heap of discarded coconut shells, inspecting the husks gingerly for deadly snakes lurking within. Two highly poisonous Papua New Guinean small-eyed snakes - whose venom can kill a person in hours - had been captured and safely boxed away, ready to be transported to Mr Williams’ laboratory in the capital, Port Moresby.
It was just another day at the office for Mr Williams, an Australian scientist who has devoted his career to saving hundreds of lives lost to snake bites in Papua New Guinea each year.
For several months at a time, he criss-crosses the country, armed with a two-pronged “grab stick” and cloth sack, to capture some of its deadliest predators - death adders, Papuan black snakes, brown snakes and the worst offender of all, the fearsome Papuan taipan.
(I wonder what the final results were for the contest we were voting on for David Williams last year ?)

The site also says he began immunizing himself against snake bites after discussing the procedure in 1991 with Bill Haast. Haast opened the Miami Serpentarium in 1947, extracting venom from snakes at the tourist attraction until 1985.

Scientists put bite on snakes
KEN Winkler knows his snakes. But has the physician and toxinologist ever been bitten? "Never. I take a low-risk approach. Get your collaborators to handle the snakes," he confesses, pointing to one such collaborator, doctoral student David Williams. That's 2.9 bites per 100,000 Australians. Winkel estimates that just a handful -- perhaps two, three or four -- Australians die each year from snakebite. He found PNG's annual incidence of snakebite was 561.9 cases per 100,000 people. Nearly 26 per cent of the victims died. Globally, about 5 million people are bitten each year, of whom up to 200,000 will die. Others will be maimed for life, suffering amputated arms and legs.

Sea Snakes Seek Out Freshwater To Slake Thirst
Sea snakes may slither in saltwater, but they sip the sweet stuff. So concludes a University of Florida zoologist in a paper appearing this month in the online edition of the November/December issue of the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology. Harvey Lillywhite says it has been the “long-standing dogma” that the roughly 60 species of venomous sea snakes worldwide satisfy their drinking needs by drinking seawater, with internal salt glands filtering and excreting the salt. Experiments with three species of captive sea kraits captured near Taiwan, however, found that the snakes refused to drink saltwater even if thirsty — and then would drink only freshwater or heavily diluted saltwater. (cool research - it would seem that this should be obvious, but for years folks have had it wrong. Cro)

Snake bite is a 'neglected tropical disease'
Cobras, vipers, black mambas and other venomous snakes take between 20,000 and 94,000 lives each year, and bite another 421,000 to 1,841,000 people. However, the economic toll of snakebites could be far greater than many infectious diseases, says Janaka de Silva, an epidemiologist at the University of Kelaniya in Ragama, Sri Lanka, who spearheaded the new report. De Silva is hoping the study will raise the profile of snakebites. "We want to get the snake bite classified as a neglected tropical disease," he says.

A cocktail of recognized venom toxin sequences was detected in the library, but the venom also contained three-finger toxin-like transcripts, a family of poisons thought only to occur in another family of snakes (Elapidae).

Snake-Ridden Florida Island Provides Unlikely Haven for Birds
"The population of cottonmouths on Seahorse Key is large and dense—I mean a lot of snakes," said Harvey Lillywhite, a University of Florida biologist who has been studying the island.
About 600 vipers slither around the 165-acre (67-hectare) island, Lillywhite estimates—in some areas with an average of 22 cottonmouths on every palm tree-covered acre.

Snakebite reaction causes death
A Ridgeway woman died last week from what doctors are calling a severe allergic reaction to a snakebite.A state medical examiner reviewed the case and doctors told the family that it “likely was an extremely rare allergic reaction to the venom. They said ordinarily in a worst case scenerio, a copperhead bite would cause a loss of limb. They said she would have had to have been bitten by 20 snakes at the same time to have caused her death,” “Another possible scenerio is that at some point in her life she had a bee sting or other insect bite that deposited an enzyme” which the snake venom interacted with, causing the extreme reaction. The poisonous snakes in this area are copperheads, timber rattlesnakes and canebrake rattlesnakes, he said.
“The poison from these snakes can cause certain people a lot of problems but an average healthy adult human should be able to survive a bite of either of these with no medical attention,” Boyce said.

The tigers tend to hang around areas where there’s water because their favourite tucker is frogs. Browns go for mice and birds, so we’re finding them in the drier areas.”

Snakes Locate Prey Through Vibration Waves
It is often believed that snakes cannot hear. This presumption is fed by the fact that snakes lack an outer ear and that scientific evidence of snakes responding to sound is scarce. Snakes do, however, possess an inner ear with a functional cochlea.
....present evidence that snakes use this structure to detect minute vibrations of the sand surface that are caused by prey moving. Their ears are sensitive enough to not only “hear” the prey approaching, but also to allow the brain, i.e., the auditory system, to localize the direction it is coming from.

Tampa Postman OK After Getting Fang Mail From Likely Rattler
Joe Pittman, a registered nurse at the hospital and a snakebite specialist for the Florida Poison Control Center, administered pain medication to Arango but no antivenin because Arango's symptoms weren't severe. He considered keeping Arango overnight to ensure he was in good health. Pittman said Arango identified the snake that bit him – brown with yellow spots – by indicating a photograph of an eastern diamondback rattlesnake. In Florida, bites from these snakes cause the most fatalities, he said.
"It's not the first time I've heard of a snake in a mailbox," Pittman said, noting that snakes will seek a high perch after rain. "Snakes can get into amazing places. They'll flatten their bodies right out."

Texas tries to control invasion of exotic snakes
And beginning April 1, any person in Texas possessing or offering for sale any venomous snake not native to Texas or any of five species of non-native constrictors will have to obtain a permit from the state.
Acting on a mandate from the 2007 session of the Legislature, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission this past month adopted rules creating a "controlled exotic snake permit."
Under terms of the regulations, any person possessing or transporting a venomous snake not native to Texas, a green anaconda, or any of four species of python (African rock, Asiatic rock, reticulated, southern African) must buy an annual permit from TPWD.
Private owners of the regulated species will be required to annually purchase a $20 "recreational controlled exotic snake " permit.

The snakes are here
What makes the Mojave rattlesnake unique is that, like black mambas and cobras, the venom is neurotoxic, Banashek said. That means it can potentially alter the nervous system of a person who is bitten. As a member of the pit viper family, they can lunge and hit their prey as it's moving by - sensing it through their tongues - rather than striking downward like a cobra.

TV's Wild bunch
Bear Grylls can turn elephant dung into a refreshing drink.I'm certainly not a person who relishes eating yak eyeballs or goat testicles, but it is part of survival.Snake all taste pretty much the same. A few weeks ago, I caught a big one and ate that straight away, just raw. It's sort of blood and guts and meat.
Dr Brady Barr describes himself as lucky. Watching his TV show, Dangerous Encounters With Brady Barr, he's more than a little crazy too. While the python bite didn't kill him, danger is at the core of his show and despite "I'm scared" being one of his favourite lines, you can tell he thrives on it. "We were in the Congo and we had a group of pygmies guiding us," he deadpans, "and they just thought we were a bunch of folks from the States who didn't know what we were doing. But then we came across a gaboon viper, a really deadly snake, the longest of any deadly snake, and these guys [the pygmies] were terrified of it and I just ran up there and grabbed it. Man, they just thought I was the toughest man on the planet and I was their best friend." ( Strange, I wonder why does Barr think the Gaboon is the longest venomous snake ?? Defenatly not longest, LOL, Just more proof that Barr is not very good with snakes ! Cro )

Unlocking The Psychology Of Snake And Spider Phobias
Hundreds of thousands of people count snakes and spiders among their fears, and while scientists have previously assumed we possess an evolutionary predisposition to fear the unpopular animals, researchers at UQ's School of Psychology may have proved otherwise.“[In the past, this] has been explained by saying that people are predisposed by evolution to fear certain things, such as snakes and spiders, that would have been dangerous to our ancestors.
“[However], people tend to be exposed to a lot of negative information regarding snakes and spiders, and we argue this makes them more likely to be associated with phobia.”(this means folks are "conditioned" to fear snakes, which I have always thought to be the case)

It is perhaps the only "fatal accident" due to a snake bite - and certainly the only one in Massachusetts - that has been immortalized in an American folk song, one that is now more than two centuries old.

Viper's venom may help Emeryville biotech treat stroke
The future of Neurobiological Technologies Inc. may rest squarely in the jaws - or shall we say venom - of the Malayan pit viper.
The 19-year-old firm is pouring millions of dollars and much of its resources into developing a stroke drug derived from the venom of these deadly Southeast Asian snakes. The gamble - like most in biotechnology - is a highly risky one.

Water Snake Startles Fish So They Flee Into Its Jaws
Forget the old folk tales about snakes hypnotizing their prey. The tentacled snake from South East Asia has developed a more effective technique. The small water snake has found a way to startle its prey so that the fish turn toward the snake's head to flee instead of turning away. In addition, the fish's reaction is so predictable that the snake actually aims its strike at the position where the fish's head will be instead of tracking its actual movement.

West African Green Mamba Snake
Two West African Green Mambas, both males, were hatched from the same clutch of eggs last summer at a Zoo in Texas. Reptile Keeper Tim Trout says he's glad they were born in captivity. "Mambas from the wild can be very aggressive, really tough animals to handle," he said. "When you get babies like this, that were born in captivity, they're a little bit calmer, and it's just a heck of a lot safer to handle them." (yep, got to watch out for those mamba snakes)

When snakes invade, call the wranglers
KEY LARGO -- In Python Catching 101, a few principles are paramount: Stay out of strike range. Don't let a 12-footer wrap around your body and squeeze. And beware of gushing snake poop -- a harmless, but smelly, reptile defense mechanism, instructor Jeffrey Fobb warned a group of wanna-be snake catchers.

WHIT GIBBONS: We need to help protect sea krait population
“Sea snakes are strange and wonderful critters distributed primarily in the Southeast Asian and Australian region. Related to the venomous cobra family, sea snakes have two main subgroups. The first includes the 'true’ sea snakes; these species are specialized for a fully aquatic existence, have live birth, and never leave the water. The second group includes about a half dozen amphibious species known as sea kraits, which hunt their food in the water but move into terrestrial shoreline habitats to digest food, mate, shed their skin and lay eggs.

Why doesn't its venom kill the cobra?
The first time Zoltan Takacs was bitten by a venomous snake was during his sophomore year in high school."It was a long-nosed viper," recalled Takacs, 38, a natural toxins researcher at the University of Chicago. "It had shed its skin, and I was stretching the skin out next to the viper to compare the lengths. That was a mistake. Most of the time when you get bit, it's your mistake that does it."
He'd have liked to seek out exotic, tropical species, but travel was largely forbidden outside the Eastern Bloc countries in those days, so the Cold War limited him to gathering only socialist snakes.
He has been to 116 countries, pretty much the entire venomous itinerary of Earth, including places such as Yemen, New Guinea and the southern Philippines where local strife has meant that snakes aren't the biggest danger.
"You rent a soldier or two for security," he said. "They're cheap."

Wonderful stories from the ‘snake man’ of Wellsville
“Twentynine years ago, I found a hollowedout cavity in some soft earth made by a female black rat snake. In it were 16 eggs. But by the next day, a bulldozer had crushed the nest. All but one of those eggs were broken. I took that egg home, created a sawdust nest for it in an aquarium and watched it for weeks. Ives also told me about Pennsylvania rattlesnake hunts in which he participated. Unlike those Texas hunts in which hundreds of snakes are killed, these are carefully controlled. The snakes must be carefully captured alive, measured and marked so that records may be kept of their distribution. Then after the contest, the snakes are returned to where they were found.

World's first universal herbal-based antidote discovered in Sarawak
Dr Patau Rubis claimed that the herbal antidote, derived from various leaves from the jungle and based on the traditional Bidayuh healing practices, could cure anyone who have been attacked or bitten by poisonous snakes, insects, bees or wasps or those who accidentally drink chemically-made poisons such as paraquat and weedkiller. "One cup of this herbal antidote has relieved four people from snake bites, wasp and caterpillar urine." Refusing to divulge the details of the ingredients for fear that outsiders will try to patent it, he said he had written to the Sarawak Health Department to conduct research on the herb and proposed that the Bau Hospital be the research centre. (I find stories like this interesting - what if this fellow has actually found a product that blocks venom receptor sites - just like a kingsnake does to be immune to snake venom ? )

Zoos, owners of dangerous animals subject to a few new rules
The rules, adopted Thursday by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will require owners of venomous snakes and other dangerous animals such as lions, tigers and bears, to keep a list of names and addresses for all contiguous landowners and neighbors. Animal owners also must have a disaster plan, describing what they will do if a hurricane, flood or fire occurs.
