I have a pair of juvi Crotalus cumanensis that will literally launch themselves off my hooks and are too small to tail. I have a pair of Gentle Giant tongs, but they are just too big and bulky to use on these little 16” snakes. The Mighty Midgets, on the other hand, are the perfect tool for working with wild little hots such as these.
The construction is top-notch: MILLED aluminum with a stainless steel shaft and enclosed actuator rod. The aluminum pistol style grip is comfortable and utilizes a trigger that is pulled with the index finger, making one-hand operation very easy. With conventional tong designs, the “trigger” is recessed into the full length of the grip, requiring four fingers to actuate the jaws-thus preventing as solid a grip as is possible with the MM tongs and sacrificing some degree of pressure control. The trigger, upper, and lower jaws are encased in surgical tubing for enhanced grip and padding.
I can place a finger in the jaws and squeeze the trigger as hard as I can, and not cause the slightest amount of pain in the clamped finger, but still create enough restraining pressure to hold even the squirmiest of snakes. The tongs are light and maneuverable and very easy to use. They are offered in 39” and 26”. I prefer the shorter 26” length for added control and since I use them on relatively small hots. I simply grab the snake at a point about 1/3 the overall length down from its head, and then tail it to keep it from flailing its body about, thus reducing its risk of injury. They work great for small snakes; however, the Mighty Midgets can also be used effectively on larger snakes as well. My friend uses two sets-one in each hand- to handle adult monocle cobras with ease. I’m thinking about getting another pair for my self to avoid having to touch the animal at all.
At $85.00 and $75.00 for the long and short versions respectively, they are a little pricey, but after examining the quality and time that goes into them, the price is reasonable…and the tongs are guaranteed by Genesis Reptile Co. Plus, when it comes to useful equipment for safely handling venomous snakes, price is not really a concern of mine.
