A chicken? Take photos MM.

Yesterday I got a call about a big snake in someones chicken coop. I figured a rat snake eating chicks, But when I got there, I saw a black rat snake had killed 3 adult chickens and very apparently had consumed one of them. The snake wasn't a big 6+ footer either. About 4+.The bulge in this snake was unbeleiveable.Looked about to pop.So I carefully removed it and put it in a pillowcase and thanked the guy for not kiling it and left. The whole time I was worried about it regurgeing that chicken in the pillowcase, but it never did.

That's what the splitters tell me. It's Pantherophis, not Elaphe.

Before the snake ate the possum, you could see the glossy matted coating on the possum. So I could tell it had already been down the gullet. It did stink though. I couldn't tell how long it had been dead.

I've been out of the loop it seems, have black rats gone the way of the corn snake? no longer elaphe?

I have seen the same photos that RepFan referred to. It's good to know about all the possible prey items a snake may have on its list. I would be interested in seeing footage of snakes eating out of their "comfort zone". Not its normal food items. Thanks, it was a good selection, it made me a little nervous, I wondered if the snake could do it!

A clip showing the regurgitation of the opossum would have been even more interesting--I would have thought it impossible if the opossum were actually consumed. Chris, is it correct to assume that you did not arrive on the scene until after the dogs? It seems unlikely that the opossum was killed by the snake, as a fresh-killed opossum would not attract flies so quickly . . . .

Dang! I've always thought that Panterophis were neat, but I have a newfound respect for them.

I could smell the thing.
Thoughts?
Life subsists on death. Good to see the critter getting a meal. I hate it when someone watchs me eat. And I was waiting for him to upchuck at any moment from being disturbed.
It was interesting!
Thanks!
