Speak Out: Road cruising
As summer quickly approaches, field herpers are getting back into the field. Road cruising is the simplest means of field collecting and among the most popular. For this speakout topic, I would like to see herpers share cruising stories, strategies, techniques, and hot spots. When giving locations bear in mind most people reading them will not know slang road names, so try to give proper road numbers and exits from major interstates if applicable. Also include the species one would likely encounter on the roads suggested. This is the first summer for many “green” herpers, so let’s try to point them in the right direction.

Just found a great deal. . . free Hawaii or Las Vegas Vacations with FREE Airfare also WIN Cash / Hotel Rooms / Show Tickets / Dinner. It cost nothing to play. All I had to do was fill out a form and play slots, which I was going to do anyway. Made money at the slots and now I am ready to win more. The guys at http://www.insidervlv.com really give me good deals and great information.

Anybody out there know of any good places to look for snakes in south or north carolina? Dont worry, I dont keep the snakes, I let them stay where I find them.

I think road cruising is great and its better then walking in the woods if you dont have to, I caught a small cottonmouth last night in south carolina (long enough to let my son look at it) and did it by road cruising. I have found several snakes road cruising..only problem I dont know of many places to cruise here in north carolina.

I believe the best road cruising is Shenandoah National Park. During late summer take a drive on skyline drive around 830 pm and head towards matthew's arm and i guarantee you will see atleast 3 to 5 timber rattlesnakes in less than 30 minutes. Oh and if there is a light rain following consecutive sunny days and you go up there at night it's like herpomania. I have seen kingsnakes, northern pinesnakes, a couple corn snakes, but the most numerous snake on skyline drive is the timber rattlesnake and mostly the dark phase. My opinion the baddest looking rattlesnake on the continent, but as easy going as a bunny rabbit.
A close second road is ocatee club in Jasper South Carolina. Anytime of the day will reveal snakes of all kinds. I have seen some really fatty eastern cottonmouths and Green Water Snakes here as big around as my calf muscle.

I am new to road crusin myself, but because I am doing an independent herp survey of the WLA refuge here in marion county, S.C. from now until November I am sure I will be a pro soon enough. I have talked to some people about it and have read over some literature, and night time seems to be the best for crusin and I would suggest (according to what part of the country you are in) to find roads beside a water source so you can catch them coming to he water or leaving it.

Im in Southern NJ, and some of the best places are so dence, bogs, management areas, etc. We find the usual Rats snakes, Garters, on a few occasions, ran across some Coastal Plain Milks. That was cool. They are beauties.

What a bunch of stingy people that visit this web sight. No one will reveal what exact roads they catch snakes on. Be giving you don't always have to be on the recieving end of everything. Help out fellow herpers that are like you and me and would like to find new places to hunt too.
