Speak Out: Road cruising
As summer quickly approaches, field herpers are getting back into the field. Road cruising is the simplest means of field collecting and among the most popular. For this speakout topic, I would like to see herpers share cruising stories, strategies, techniques, and hot spots. When giving locations bear in mind most people reading them will not know slang road names, so try to give proper road numbers and exits from major interstates if applicable. Also include the species one would likely encounter on the roads suggested. This is the first summer for many “green” herpers, so let’s try to point them in the right direction.

Sorry was a little off topic with my last post. Kentucky is a good place to go snake hunting. I have been to a few good places there the best thing to do is find a place you like and try it out.

God I remember the days or nights that I would spend road cruising with my father. We would leave around 7 or 8 get something from the resturant next door then head from Tin Town or the Red River. Sometimes we would be out there intill 3 or 4 in the morning depending on the movement of the snakes. But there is one trip that stands out in my mind to this day, it was when I was 14 or 15 and my father told me we were going to S.C again. Now this was my second trip and we didnt catch much on the first trip down there. So I wasnt really pumped about going but I went anyways. There were four of us and the trip took forever. We got there right as it got dark and desided to start looking right then. Not even 10 minutes after we started we found are first corn snake. Then about 20 minutes later are first cottonmouth. The night just kept going Keith and I stayed out intill about 4 a.m by the end of the night we had caught 9 corn snakes and countless copperheads ( well not caught photographed them.)That was the best snake hunting trip ever , even beats the trip to brazil.
One more thing pictures capture the snake forever , they last even longer than the real snake would :)

Yeah the south sure does have a lot of species and is real plantiful too. I love herping in Florida, Arkansas, and southern Texas. Oklahoma is nice, but all our stuff is really spread out and I live in the north east so all I have as far as venomous goes is copperheads and cane-brake rattlesnakes. You can find Broad Band Copperheads, southern Copperheads, Cottonmouths, Pygmy Rattlesnakes, and Cane brake Rattlesnakes. in the west you can find Western Diamond Back Rattlesnakes and in the north west you can find Massasugas, and Praire Rattlers.

I moved from South Carolina to NE Pennsylvania after retiring from the Navy about 9 years ago. What I wouldn't do to have the variety and abundance of herp species available here to road cruise that the lucky southerners have!

Nice artical Steve. Yeah I like hooks too. I usual use them for road cruising, or a snake out in the open. Also when herping around rocky areas I always take a hook and a tong. I love the new M1 tongs from mid west and their standard 40' hook.the Tongs are really gentle with the snakes and is just so light weight compared to normal standards. Also I like to use the hook when I find a snake down in a crack I can pull them out nice and careful and once out I use the tongs untill I"m in an area I can work them safely. I really can't wait untill it gets just a little warmer to road cruise. Untill then I'm out around rocky areas after copperheads and cane brake rattlesnakes. well don't really know why I'm posting. (bored) lol.
I shall go. take care every one. Stay safe and happy herpings.
Cheers,
Blake
