Okay, you're only 16 so it's definitely possible. Steps to take:
1. Read and memorize every book you can on reptiles. Become a self taught expert on the subject. By the time you are 18, your knowledge could reach a level that is impressive to experienced herpers. It all depends on your dedication.
2. Decide whether or not money is important in your future. If it is, you'll probably want to get a college degree. If so, investigate what kind of financial aid is available for you to attend an Austrailian university, preferrably one with a reputable field research program. And remember, you won't be able to get into college with poor grades in high school.
3. You are definitely going to need experience on your resume', so get a job cleaning snake cages somewhere. Start small and work your way up. If you have to start in a pet store, then do it. Prove that you are willing to do whatever it takes to attain your goal. By the time you are 18, you may be able to start working in a zoo. A letter of recommendation from a curator never hurt anyone in this field.
4. You might want to purchase some good backpacking equipment. Living in a tent a hundred meters inside the treeline is not only a memorable experience, it's cheap. There are cheap ways to do everything, all of which you need to learn. In this field, unless your parents have a lot of money, you're going to have to pay your dues up front.
