There have been deaths from Aspidelaps envenomations. Their venom is bogg standard African elapid, with the usual hodge-podge of 3FTx (some alpha-neurotoxic, some cytotoxic, some with unknown functions) and type IB PLA2 toxins (some antiplately, some preseynaptic neurotoxic). So its a case of how much venom they deliver rather than it being lower toxicity. Imagine taking a bite from a Naja species with the same sized head. People constantly underestimate the smaller elapids, and do such at their peril. A good example is the tragid death of Hans Schnurrenberger by a 30 cm Sinomicrurus macclellandi (formerly Calliophis macclellandi); the initial bite was ignored until neurotoxic symptoms showed up 6 h later, and death was 8 h after envenomation. They may be smaller but their still elapids!
Have a read of our Colubroidea LC/MS paper, it has Aspidelaps in there along with others

Also, there is no antivenin, so it may complicate things a little bit more. I would think the size of the snake would also have a major factor in severe envenomations (kind of like severe envenomations in atractaspids). It seems like size matters with certain genus and species. Bryan, any thoughts on this?
At least everything turned out well with the girl that was bitten by the shield-nose not too long ago.
