Dear bush viper,
Louisiana has a healthy population of venomous snakes. Depending on where you want to go I could lend a few of my herping areas. I live in the Monroe (north LA) area and my areas of exploration are typically Russell Sage and Black Bayou Lake NWRefuge. These are great areas for cottonmouths. Agkistrodons, both piscivorus and contortrix are plentiful and I find probably 5 to 1 more cottonmouths than even non-venomous anythings. Some places are literally just swimming with piscivorus'. You might even want to wear snake proof boots in the Spring months if nothing else for extra confidence. Of the entire north Louisiana area, the absolute snake haven is Tensas NWR in Tensas parish between Winnsboro and Tallulah. Tensas has the largest population of Black Bears in LA, and if they can survive and proliferate then anything can. I hear lots of reports of Canebrake Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus atricaudatus)encounters as well as lots and lots of Cottonmouths, and Copperheads to a lesser degree. Canebrakes are always my goal when I go out and they are incredibly hard to find, but I hear of them being in the middle of dirt roads and one even being on a tree limb over some water. Tensas has a great blend of bottomland hardwoods mixed with palmetto and cypress swamps. You actually need to be aware and prepared for encounters with black bears and don't forget mosquito repellant! Let me know how your experience turns out. Louisiana is such a great state and I think only Florida could possibly have more snakes. As far as Alligator mississippiensis goes, there is very healthy population at all three NWR's and I have seen several at the wildlife pier at Black Bayou Lake. They are also building a "Wet Lab" for educational purposes and it will soon be the premier NWR in the state.
