its not really a myth but everytime anybody sees a water snake here in NJ the instantly say "watch out for the water moccasin" and "run here comes a cottonmouth". it annoys the heck out of me. but i just try and tell them that there are no cottonmouths in NJ, but they never believe me.

One I heard semi-recently was about a female rattlesnake giving birth to her babies, then when danger threatens, she opens her mouth and the babies crawl inside her for safety. I guess maybe someone was falling asleep during a croc documentary for that one...lol.

One that was fairly new to me, and a favorite around the reptile house, is that rattlesnakes have to rattle their tails in order to "mix their poison". If you can remove the rattle or stop them "before" they get a chance to shake it up, they will be defenseless. Thus far I have been unable to get any of my keepers to test that theory....LOL

The Nagas are spiritual entities, like the Phantom, which can assume both a human and Cobra form. It is from the term, "Naga" we name the Cobra genus, "Naja".
The Cobra's hood inspires awe. Legend states that the Cobra used its hood to shield Buddha from a severe storm. The cobra also shaded Buddha from the sun, while he slept in the hot desert. When he awoke, Buddha was thankful and expressed his gratitude to the cobra by affectionately blessing the snake touching it on the back of the hood. This is where the infamous "spectacle" (Naja naja) is believed to have originated.

I had this lady at work try to tell me that her family found an eastern diamondback in an old home they were remodeling. I live in South west Virginia, right next to East Tennessee. I told this lady she may have been mistaken, her reply was, " oh no, it had diamonds and everything, my husband and boys went up there to look for its momma."
