hi all. I just want to know how venomous PYGMY Rattle snakes are??? I live in South Africa, and there is'nt any anti-venom for "exotic species" here. There are plenty of venomous reptiles from over seas for sale. If i get bitten by one, i would have to be treated symptomatticly. Do you recomend me keeping a PYGMY RATTLER(with-out anti-venom)or not?. I would also like to know if Gila monster lizzards are deadly to humans.I hope to hear fom you a.s.a.p.
oh, I LOVE REPTILES!!!!!

Hi Breezer,
I tend to think of a Pygmy rattler as having a fairly strong venom but not producing a great deal. Generally their bites aren't too serious, but I have heard of a couple that were. As far as antivenom, I think that they would likely be covered by Protherics CroFab. You could look at www.snakebitenews.com, I believe it is, to see what Protherics uses.
Heloderma venom is painful as hell, but to my understanding there are no human fatalities. They don't really use their venom for subdueing prey but use it for a totally defensive purpose. This is evidenced by their very rudimentary and seemingly inefficiant envenomation mechanism. Dr Findlay Russell's book "Snake Venom Poisoning" has a decent chapter on Heloderma envenomation.
Cheers
Roger
