hi all. I just want to know how venomous PYGMY Rattle snakes are??? I live in South Africa, and there is'nt any anti-venom for "exotic species" here. There are plenty of venomous reptiles from over seas for sale. If i get bitten by one, i would have to be treated symptomatticly. Do you recomend me keeping a PYGMY RATTLER(with-out anti-venom)or not?. I would also like to know if Gila monster lizzards are deadly to humans.I hope to hear fom you a.s.a.p.
oh, I LOVE REPTILES!!!!!

Well,Sisturus are not as bad as some other stuff you can get in South Africa with out much hassle.I was bitten by a Prairie Rattlesnake(C.viridis) and a Diamond back(C.atrox) and survived both bites with out serum with treatment at the Garden City Clinic in Johannesburg. No amputations and no serious side effects.Good doctor to contact is Dr.Kritzinger at Garden City, excellent trauma doctor and experince in exotics.Crotalid 1 is not freely available in RSA and by the time they find it,the patient is usually out of trouble.Still be careful.

I live in NE Georgia where Pigmys are pretty common.I find them quite frequently on my property. Most bites have only local/systemic effects, but don't let the small size fool you, from literature I have read, their venom is highly toxic and can produce serious physiological problems such as respiratory collapse, and as with any venomous snake, there is always the posibility of anaphylaxis. But then, the Atlanta Falcons could win the Super Bowl next year too.Compared to what you can catch in your "backyard", I wouldn't worry too much. Just be carefull.Marty
