No,
Copperhead are a lot deferent than a rattlesnake. www.emedicine.com has both of them. Rattlesnakes have a lot more dangerous venom than a copperhead. Also the anti-venin is different too.

Could you elaborate here. I'm not aware of copperheads using a different antivenom than MOST rattlesnakes. In fact, the links you posted to emedicine reccomend CroFab for both...which as far as I know is correct. The difference is in the AMOUNT given.

The anti-venom (crofab) is used for rattlesnakes and copperheads. It is used for ALL american pitviper bites except for the coral snake. The venom is not as potent as most of the rattlesnakes living in North America. However, it all depends of how the victim's body reacts to the venomous bite. The elderly, the younger children, weak or low immune system, or if you are allergic or hypersensitive to snake venom, then you run the possibility of a serious reaction to a copperhead bite. Even if you are a health adult, you still run a chance of a serious envenomation or reaction from a copperhead. From my experience, I have had skin reactions from non-venomous snake bites that have lasted for 5 days. Itching, burning, pain, wheals, etc. Go to the websight that crofab has. I think it is www.fougera.com or crofab.com. Request the information. You will get a great video from Dr. Bush, and also a packet of medical treatment, which includes a paper written just on copperhead bites. Hope this helps. Bryan

Just be careful of 15 yr old "experts". Different antivenom for rattlesnakes & copperheads..Phillip you should read some of those protocols yourself rather than giving advice. May some time with Klaubers "Rattlesnakes" would help too, can't tell the difference between a Black-tailed Rattlesnake & Mojave Rattlesnake.

To clarify what Bryan said: CroFab is used for all of OUR PITVIPERS (Agkistrodon and the Crotalidae allies). Coral snakes are not pitvipers, they are Elapids (allies of the cobra, krait, and sea snake). Hope this helps.

As one who got tagged about a month ago I can tell you you are way better off getting educated prior to messing-w-hots. Even the "mildly venemous" Copperhead. In my case I was very blessed because I was determined to not go to the ER and I think I was envenomated-w-a very small amount. In hindsite I can tell you this was a mistake as had I been alergic or been pumped-w-a lot of venom I would have been in dire straits. It taught me a huge lesson and I got away-w-it. I will not handle any hot snake again period because I would have bet money I was far away from this thing and when he decided to strike it was lightning fast and from far away. Theree was no way I had time to react. I am lucky that I do not have alergic reactions (so far) to the more common things like bees & fire ants (got about 20 bites from them today)but I do know a women that would be in the hospital for 1 fire ant bite. That's if she made it there by having her epipen available.
Unless you are an expert that has weeks of training do not handle hots IMO.

I was still thinking about how wyeth made two anti-venins. I guess crofab has done somethings different. The one thing about the western rattlesnakes is that I am not as familar with them as you say you are anonymous. I guess you must be so much smarter me. I guess that is why you post anonymous.
