Over the last few years I have heard many of you explain to new keepers that they need to consider what they are getting and to order a supply of antivenom. It seems that every time someone asks where to get this antivenom no one can tell them. I am wondering just how many of us actually have a supply of antivenom should we get bitten. I have never been able to even get information about obtaining the permits in order to get any. If someone knows the secret please share it with the rest of us.
Thanks

Hi Vette,
Yes, you should look at getting your own supply of anitvenom. But ya know what? Getting it is a royal PITA. There is an importation permit from USDA APHIS which costs $94.00 to get ($61 to renew annually) and an Investigative New Drug permit from the FDA. I don't remember the cost of it. I have both applications and am in the process of applying.
What the govt wants is something professioanl loking and sounding, hence my Summit Venom Lab and Educational Centre or whatever I choose to call it. You might wish to incorporate or go LLC or something else.
There are only a handfull of private keepers who have done this. Some of them did incorporate a venom lab or do some sort of organization. If you don't have a particularly large collection--maybe one or two venomous snakes--and are not routinly at risk of getting tagged, then an antivenom bank may be the way to go, or at least Al Cruz's phone number.
Oh yes, one more thing, the aforementioned permits do not aply to Wyeth or croFab. You need a Rx for those.
Cheers
Roger
