I'm not an expert on Taipans, but I do know that their are two different subspecies. The Inland Taipan or Fierce Snake has the most toxic venom of any snake on the planet. It's cousin's is powerful too but comes in farther down the list.

No. As Bill said in the other version of this thread the inland (Oxyuranus microlepidotus) and the coastal (Oxyuranus scutellatus) are two different species.
However, the coastal taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus scutellatus) and the Papua-New Guinea taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus canni) are two subspecies of the coastal. At least a couple of people claim to have discovered other subspecies or even species. The one I remember specifically is not taken very seriously...

P.S. The coastal and the inland are so different that some argue they shouldn't even be in the same genus.

Larry already pointed this out, but they are not even subspecies of each other. They are just in the same Genus.

I moved this reply to get rid of a duplicate thread.

Hoyta, the only way in which they're the same thing is that they're both taipans. The coastal is Oxyuranus scutellatus, while the inland is Oxyuranus
microlepidotus. Same family (Elapidae), same genus (Oxyuranus), but two different species.
Sincerely,
Bill Huseth
