I just tried to feed my Edb a large rat . He sized it up ,stalked it , waited for the right moment and wham.
The rat died in less than 5 minutes. He inspected it the went to eating the rat. But the poor snake acted like he couldn't get his mouth around the shoulders
and spit what he had down alread . And then he left the rat alone and went back to his log and curled up.
I took the rat out of the cage . Did I do the right thing or could the snake finish the rat later.
And one more thing could some one give me any ideas on like a feed chart on proper sizes on rattlesnakes and their food. Thank you.
Andy

I'm guessing on frequency of feeding as I don't have any edbs, or any rattlers for that matter, but I believe 1 rat every 10-14 days would be sufficient.
The rodent should be about as thick as the snake is, and shouldn't cause more than a slight bulge when eaten.
Don't feed live, use f/t.
You should have left the rat in there, it's possible you scared the snake and he left it go, but he probably would have come back to eat it...he definitely won't if you remove it from the cage!
good luck,
Steve

The advice on feeding dead food is good. Most snakes will will either readily accept, or accept with a little work at first, pre-killed food. An adult edb needs to to eat every 3 to 5 weeks...more frequently for younger animals. If that rat was a large adult, it may well have been to big for the three footer to comfortably handle.

JUST wondering...if a 6.5 ft edb can eat a full grown rabbit, shouldnt a 3 footer eat an average rat....unless it was a jumbo rat i dont see how it couldnt eat it...my 1 ft canebrake can easily eat any mouse i've been able to find...which just looking at it i wouldve bet against it but it seems pit vipers, especially rattlers can eat proportionately larger meals than a lot of snakes i have kept...except burmese pythons which would give them a run for their money...i gotta get me an edb .....maybe one day

I just tried to feed him a smaller rat (med size).
He didn't want it and he went after the rat and bit it. But he didn't eat it . Is that normal?

in the wild...if u offer a 5ft canebrake a squirrel or a mouse, it will always take the larger meal because if it wastes the same amount of energy on a smaller meal then it will decrease its chances for survival...and feeding a snake the proper amount is better than frequent small meals or one huge meal...i just mimic the snakes naturally occuring circumstances to the point where it always has enough food but never too much or too little
