I am planning on trying to come up with a way to more easily create antivenom. I will hopefully start on this within a year. I was hoping to set up some relationships with some venomous herpers in my area so that I could get fresh DNA samples from some of their snakes. I will more than likely be attending either Virginia Tech or Marshall University. Any questions are welcome and any offers are certainly welcome.

No one will take you seriously unless you: a) fully complete your profile b) give some indication that you know what you are talking about and understand the obstacles you face. You are broaching a topic that requires a great deal of expertise, state of the art lab facilities, focus and funding. Do you have all of that?

And DNA samples of the snakes, random snakes from herper's collections, will help in the production of antivenin how? Seriously, I am not attempting to be a smart-ass here, but you have piqued my curiosity.

By placing the genes containing the DNA for the proteins that make up the veonom inside of a yeast. The colony of yeast wont be reactive to the veonom of most snakes considering they are blood or neurosystem related. My major is recombinant gene technology and am in the process of applying to Virginia Tech. graduate school for my PhD. I understand that the isolation of the proteins as well as getting the correct mixture will be hard but with the right promoters the right mixture can be obtained. That is phase 1 of my research. Im not trying to explain everything in detail until I am finished. This could help eliminate hours of milking snakes for venom and once the process is known to work other snakes could be helpful. For now I am primarily interested in rattlesnake DNA as it has more local applications and easier to find.

Craig it was a good answer but you need to have a think about what you type before you do it the reason that we ask for profiles to be filled out is due to the fact of having had numerous half wits and trolls ruining an educational site where the information given has to be accurate and no-one is gonna go into detail regarding the manufacture of anitvenin and all the processes required without first knowing that the person asking is genuine or not, It only takes a few miuites to fill out your profile and for the information you will recive back, is a small task to ask of someone. And as I said if they are genuine but cant post there details due to there line of work or other reasons im sure Chris,Karl and Al will be more than happy to let them stay annonymous if they post to them there reasons for needing to remain annonymous,

Okay Keyz fair enough I just didn't think the student's question that they asked seemed like they were being a "troll"They probably forgot to do that and instead of replying to the question,it just seemed so important to tell them to fill one out!I've seen the "troll's" you speak of and I've also dealt w/peeps that didn't fill out profiles w/out a problem, but hey I'm just a litte member that enjoys the hobby and thought that this particular question was out of the norm and interesting!............Peace

Chad: As far as the fresh DNA samples you are looking for, what form would you be needing?
Are you talking about Venom Samples, Blood Samples, or Tissue Samples ?
What quantity would be needed ? Would the snakes be damaged in collecting the DNA samples ?
Could the DNA be obtained from fresh road-killed snakes, especially if they were placed on ice and kept just above freezing ?
Please let us know a little more about what kind of samples you are looking for.
Best Regards JohnZ
