I went to the official site for the movie Snakes on a Plane. The only real link it has is for the fan site of the week...I clicked it and it said "VenomousReptiles.org" and then linked me to the site. I don't know if anyone knew about this or not, but I didn't think the SHHS really wants to be known as a "Snakes on a Plane" fansite.

Or... do they?
I think that, at the very least, the SHHS may enjoy a slight slash-dotting effect, an increase in traffic, as every hardcore fan of SoaP waiting to see the next new hot site of the week, (and who also happens to be a snake fan), might enjoy some snake-related links, and the option to network with other snake-minded people in this way.
imho
Then again, I'm not the guy who put the link there, so don't ask me.

Yeah, I guess SoaP fansites are getting a lot of attention right now, which could be good for this site. The only problem I could forsee is a person coming in with a SoaP mindset reading around and finding out about things like the classifieds and especially air-shipping.

More visits would be a good thing but, I assume the figures will speak for themselves as this site has been holding its own very well so far an im certain that the SHHS doesn't want to be associated with the issues this film portrays, If people really want to find out about venomous snakes they will find us, It would be a shame if the site was targeted by some troll who found the link and has decided to have some fun at our expense. This would be more likley from the link posted by dubveejames as alot of people who use the link will not be specifically looking for a reptile site, They would probably be looking for something to do with the film or film related stuff, just my 2 cents worth, Keyz.

Yeah you all are right. I was thinking more of the negative consequences than the good ones. I realized my post wasn't going to help anything.....but not until the next morning. Sorry guys.

it's naive to think that people will see the link and come here with an open mind, ready to learn facts......
i experienced this a few years back with "the fast and the furious" and how all of that was fiction......people who learn from the media don't care to learn from a boring place like this or from a boring old car site.....same thing with FaF2 and FaF3........i've yet to see people really get through to the people who were educated by those films...and they never will.....those who wanna learn do it.....those who want entertainment seek that..........hopefully i'll be wrong, but i know i won't......it will be exposure for the site, but here's how i see it playing out:
1) snakes are neat, wish i had one
2) venomousreptiles.org is a site i can find all the info i need
3) a lot of people keep them, and it's legal, so i'm gonna keep one, or twelve
4) my snake got out because i put in a whopping 35% effort into building the cage, since they're so expensive
5) i'm tired of snakes, they're too hard to keep up with and are dangerous.......i hate them
6) find new "thing"
maybe i have less faith in people, but history has been and will repeat itself forever........if anything, the movie will just worsen their reputation and produce another irrational fears (snakes as weapons) that will eventually lead to "something needing to be done for our safety"
meanwhile, people with horrible driving skills are still all over the place......running stop signs and hitting me

Naive? Pffft. To be blunt, I'm not known as an idealist. I am a cold hard realist. There are many people who are interested in venomous reptiles who venture onto this site, but just simply have never had access to anyone with any pertinent knowledge. They are ripe to learn. But of course I would agree that the majority will surf in and out from that website without learning anything. They're just looking for some excitement, not reality and definitely not an education. And some people are simply unreachable, so that's really not a loss on our part. We have and do educate people on a regular basis. I couldn't begin to tell you how many emails I've answered over the years. Naive? After running this site for as long as I have, if anything I'm jaded about a few things. My head is definitely not in the sand.

people have been street racing for years, that's how most famous drag racers funded themselves just 10-20 years ago......post-fast and the furious, it's a HUGE deal.....more idiots come to watch (those who watch are usually the ones who get hurt and they crowd the racing area and bring undue attention to the scene) and more idiots get hurt.....people die....people do stupid things because they see it in movies and it's "cool"....they lack that common sense because their parents are focused on making money, not raising useful children.....
i just think this same thing will happen.....it ALWAYS does and if 5% of the people who find this site come away with a new respect for venomous snakes, then i'll be surprised......they'll either think that keeping these animals is easy, and they'll screw up later when they find out the hard way it isn't, or they'll just be bored and learn from the movie (how many times have boas and pythons been portrayed as dangerous, hissing "poisonous" snakes).......that's what i'm scared of
hopefully i'm wrong, but history supports my "theory"......many times over.......and from all this will come MORE stupid, unconstitutional bans that take away our hobbies.......all because people without a passion for these animals "don't the see the point of keeping them".......i personally think church is a joke, but since i'm not the majority, churches are gonna keep popping up on every other corner, getting those tax breaks, investing in real estate and making those involved a lot of money......in this country, not being the majority means you're screwed at some point in the future.....

People have been street racing long before any ridiculous movies were made about the activity. That’s usually how Hollywood works… people do it… Hollywood makes a stupid movie about it. As far as activity of stupidity goes… that also predates movies, and I suspect will continue for quite some time. People are going to do stupid things regardless of what they see in movies. It's part of human nature.
Now, it’s been my experience that the truth about any beliefs or interest one may have usually can be uncovered if that’s what’s really desired. There’s usually several books or web sites on whatever the subject matter may be to help one decipher fact from fiction. If however, one chooses to ignore the truth in favor of the allure of “myths” or “legends” then there are also plenty of books and web sites to accommodate the wishes of this individual as well.
Thankfully… this is NOT one of those web sites.
Just imagine how awful it would be if the movie web page in question chose to direct people instead to some web page that portrayed venomous snakes as “hideously evil in nature!” or “the scourge of the planet!” and “should be destroyed on site before they wipe out your entire family!” or worse.
Now that would really be tragic.
