Im still in shock.Kinda knew it was coming but always tried to hope for the best. I am going to apply for an exibit permit or whatever else I need to do. Any advice on how to fight this would be greatly appreciated! I always remarked that I felt safe in Ks due to the low population of hot keepers and no incidents of people getting bit by an exotic venomous reptiles(like in other states).Well I've been proven wrong. This makes me sick and I know how all you others felt when your states made the same ignorant move.Hots have been a HUGE part of my life.I have kept for nearly 12 years without any incident of any type! I guess this is how they pay responsible people for their hard work. Free country my ass! I have always been pretty patriotic but stuff like this makes me ill. The Govt. is controlling our lives more and more every day.Thats not what this country was founded on. Well at least they cant take my love for the animals.(yet)
All keep an eye out, the bans are coming your way and it doesnt take a venomous reptile related death to make it law.......Trey

This really brings a scary prospect to light. I'm assuming you didn't know anything about this before you saw the article? There certainly hadn't been anything up on the boards about it. I know here in AR, the legislature was thinking about passing a law regulating large carnivores (though not herps yet) and I only heard about it through the grapevine. In fact, I have no idea if it's a law now or not. It really worries me that laws like that can creep in right under the electorate's noses without even the slightest warning. I wonder how often this happens?
Anyway, really sorry to hear about this Trey. If there's anyone I can write, let me know.

Thanks Chance I appreciate that. Here is another link to another article. The law was passed here due to the problems with big cats.It had nothing to do with a venomous reptile problem. The ignorant people just said what the hell lets just throw venomous reptiles in there too.I know it is going to be an uphill battle here as anywhere. The main problem is lack of support. There are only a few serious hot keepers here in KS at best so that makes it a little tougher fight.I know im not going out without a fight!I havent had a chance to read the actual Bill. I am going to reserve any further rants and E mails to the State until I fully understand the situation........Trey
p.s. And yes it caught me by suprise.I heard about a new law regarding Carnivours but had NO idea that it was going to include non native venomous reptiles.Go figure:)

Once again it's a wildlife organization that is stiring up the trouble for us. Since we are not united and have no state level lobby working for us, we are easy prey.

Hey Trey, it's not as bad as it sounds. I have heard about the bill coming. Not sure if you remember I posted the "good news" here after the girl got killed.
Anyways as far as I know we will need a permit and the animals will have to be properly caged but, we can still keep them. I haven't seen the actual bill though so I may be wrong. Either way it doesn't make me happy at all!

Well, it's not ALL bad (although it does suck largely). At least you're allowed to keep native species. That means that you could at least keep some nice vipers.
Here in SC we aren't even allowed to keep native, because our bill was introduced as a "dangerous animal control" measure rather than "wildlife protection".

SC should consider humans under their "dangerous animal control" statutes. How many humans were killed by other humans last year in the state of SC (or any other state for that matter) versus bites/attacks from snakes, exotic/domestic mammals. Although WE (humans) don't regard ourselves as animals, WE (humans) are nothing more than glorified primates. NOTHING can convince me otherwise...P.S. Have you ever seen a chimpanzee pick its nose? Have you ever seen a human pick its nose? Why do we both look at the booger?!!

I haven't seen the actual law but it looks like the same "Dangerous Animal" bill that has been introduced by AR activists all over the country... including my state of NC. The Animal Protection Institue (API) wrote the bill. Their template for political action is to exploit tragic occurances (usually a big cat mauling), that are sensationalized by the media, to promote their agenda of getting all exotic animals out of private hands. Next they will use their local activists to target a well meaning but ignorant Legislator to sponsor their "Dangerous Animal" bill. It is a blanket ban on numerous animals, including many reptiles.
The only way to fight this bill is with the facts. They simply don't support the argument that any reptiles are a real danger to the public. In NC you are 100X more likely to be hurt or killed by a dog or a horse. You are much more likely to contract Salmonella from eating chicken than from handling a reptile. No one has ever been killed by a captive reptile in NC. This information comes from a study done by the NC Dept. of Health & Human Services.
Reptiles have always carried a stigma of being dangerous, regardless of the facts. These antiquated stereotypes and the cultural bias that surrounds these animals must be reveled as myth. The only way to do this is to create a statewide alliance of Hobbyists, Herpetaculturists, Herpetologists, Biologists, Veterinarians, Zoos, Museums, and State Agencies to lobby and educate the State Legislature. We have been very successful doing this in NC. We have created the NC Association of Reptile Keepers (NCARK). We have made inroads with the legilature. We are actively working with state agencies and the top herp experts from around the state and country. We have been very successful in killing this same bill here... for now. We are not naive. We know it will come back if we don't find a more permenant solution. I am confident that with all the cooperation we are getting and the top minds involved here we will create precident setting, enlightened legislation soon.
NCARK is having its Grand Opening next weekend at the Carolina Reptile & Exotic Animal Show in Raleigh. We will be unveiling our new website www.NCARK.org by friday the 5th. I am going to be speaking both days at 2pm about how to effectively promote private ownership of exotic reptiles. I urge everyone to become part of this expanding effort to maintain our rights. We will have T-shirts and raffell some amazing animals. If you are from SC or VA, what we are doing here will have great impact on the future of your states laws. Come out and bring your friends. Join us and help PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS!
