That's the million dollar question. All nature shows portray them in a negative light, but the general public doesn't seem to give it a second thought when the TV is turned off. The scary thing is that habitat destruction is the greatest threat, with the most money backing it's progress. What do we do about that?

Rattlesnake roundups absolutely make me sick. One thing that's horrible, is the same people that say they care about snakes, turn around and have a blast at a roundup. It defintely seems like it's going to be a huge struggle to put a stop to it. But I would like to think we could, with the right ambition. ----Anthony

I think habbitat loss problems are scare tacticts created by animal rights groups. We have more forests now than when this coutry was taken over by the english. Roundups and hunting is without a doubt the reason for decline of reptiles and all other creatures.

I'm not real sure how much habitat destruction effects american reptiles. However, I know it is a MAJOR problem on other continents and in other countries. For example the rainforests of central and south america, and of coarse the forests of madagascar are dissapearing quick. Such a great diverse place with 50% of the worlds chameleons is dissapearing due to habitat destruction. I agree that we do have a huge problem with the hunting and careless killing of snakes in america though.-----Anthony

Thats funny, because I am a forest manager for Weyerhaeuser and we have today a 1/3 more forest or (timber lands ) than that of 400yrs ago. Look into before your reply. We have lost a huge amount of are large timber, but have been replaced with FIR and LOBLOLLYS . The Northwest is the only area in the country that is behind.

make up your mind, are we talking about timberland or the woods/forest/woodlands,etc....because from what i understand(a few family members own two seperate lumber companies)timberland is where trees, mostly pine, grow and are suitable to be turned into paper materials....the forest isnt all "paper" trees and they arent all 100ft tall either...around here there is a lot of pine and oak forests(although 43% less than when a study was done in 1879) but they are relatively young, short trees and a lot has been planned out to replace what has already been lost...but u are the ranger so maybe all i know is what the shady arbor tree foundation people want me, the general public, to know...i heard its a huge conspiracy....besides look around the world...how much of our rainforest has disappeared in the last week...you think thats a non-n.american trend...ranger or not your full of shit

i know this could all be fake evidence from a hippie but if u think logically and forget about your job which depends on the public's opinion of the way it conducts business as much as big healthy trees then anyone could see the obvious...but whatever

First off, you should not curse in your writing, no need for the insults. I have been in the forest business since 1988 and have seen a huge turn around for the good. Your right there is a difference in timberlands and forests and the rainforests are practicly gone, but I can tell you one thing positive, these fire fighters are having one heck of a time fighting these major fires, because of the unbelievable thickness of the forests. In all of Weyerhaeuser managed forests we have strict safegaurds for animals. In georgia we have team that scouts out Gopher tortise dens and records the area and does not cut within a 9 meter surcumf. Georgia Pacific has the same policy.
