There are 3 vipers found in Spain: the European asp (Vipera aspis), the Snubnosed or Lataste's viper (Vipera berus latastei), and the Portugese viper (Vipera seoanei). If you'll check out the following website, you'll see photos of each.

Lataste's viper definitely has a "hog nose" and I would be willing to bet that they probably hide in the rocky crags you speak of. While the bite would be quite painful, deaths would be rare or probably almost unheard of. If you are bitten, simply seek medical attention and you'll be okay.

Oh yeah, they also have the Montpellier snake (Malpolon monspessulanus) which is also venomous. Moderately venomous, and there have been a few deaths recorded.

As Chris says, there are three species of vipers here in Spain.
Vipera Aspis and Vipera berus are mostly founded in the north-east of the country (near Barcelona).
Vipera Seoanei lives in the north-west corner (near Santiago de Compostela), and in the North of Portugal.
Also Malpolon Monspessulanus is in the south of Spain but, like the vipers, is rarely seeing.
Good time here in Spain, Paul, and, if you can, visit the Roman Walls in Lugo, are amazing!!!!!!!
