Rick,
There is no such snake as a Velvet Rattler. This is probably a slang name given to a snake that locals thought looked like velvet. 8' is a pretty large rattlesnake. When you saw this snake twenty years ago, where was it?

The timbers are quite often referred to as "velvet tailed rattlers". These snakes don't reach the 8 foot mark, although as a youngster in the field I can see where one may look 8 foot or more.

Rick,
I'm sorry but I cannot help ID the snake. 25 buttons you say? Thats pretty extreme on a wild snake. And 8 feet in length?

I agree that we are probably talking about a southern Timber aka Canebrake rattlesnake. Record length 74.5 inches. But I'm sure the snake that you saw was probably a large specimen. When it comes to snakes though, I think fear interferes with the visual calibration of most non-snake people.
Look up "canebrake rattlesnake" in Google.com and click on the "images" tab.

Here's my story about a "velvet rattler". I was about 9 years old and our neighbor had his pickup at the local post office--and he was showing off the snake that he had just killed. It was exactly as you described what you saw--about 8 foot long--it was the length of his pickup bed and then some(the pickup was an old 60's Ford). The snake was colorful and the skin was definately velvety. I was awed by the snake and it has been forever etched into my memory. In fact some 30 years later, I told my friend this story today and this is what prompted me to look at the web for some confirmation to my story. I have never seen or heard of such as snake sense but there is no doubt that I saw it--I have gotten confirmation from my mother who was there that day, too.
