I live in the Charlotte / Gastonia area in North Carolina. I would really love to know the closest place to hunt for Copperheads. I keep many different venomous snakes, including Cobras, Rattle Snakes, Vipers, etc. Unfortunatly I don't get to go snake hunting very much. But in the next few days / weeks I will have some time off and would love to go herping. If someone knows some hot spots that are not to far away from me please let me know. Also where would the closet place be from where I am to hunt for any Rattle snakes? I would greatly appreciate any information you can provde me. Thank you and happy herping!!! Bobby

I live in Missouri and find copperheads very often while searching for snakes. Too many to count thus far this spring and summer. I love them. The way I have had most of my luck is searching country roads right after dark, or for that matter, any time of the night. Around here they seem to be more crepuscular, being active right after the sun sets. I've found them at all times of night though. They often freeze at the presence of danger, and so if you drive slow, you should have plenty of time to get out and surround it. Probably if you drive enough roads and cover enough area, you would find one. I don't have much luck around here finding them in their hiding spots during the day. I do know where they like to hang out though. If you know of any wooded area that has a lot of debris such as boards, tin, tires, and other scrap that snakes can hide under, these are hot spots for copperheads. Also, stonewalls, rotted logs, sawdust heaps, and of coarse on rocky wooded hillsides, hiding in between and sometimes under larger flat rocks. And along streams. I think in North Carolina you have a mixture of the Northern and Southern Copperhead. Sorry I can't give you any specifics of hot spots in your area, but maybe someone from around there can help you out a bit more. Good luck! I think they're beautiful pit vipers. ----Anthony

Greetings! my favorite time to hunt is an unseasonably cool night, when the forest floor cools, many take to the road and subsequently get squashed, just last night i saw a flattened eastern king :(, bout three feet long, it was in a heavily populated area w'in city limits, if you venture out into the sticks under similar conditions it should prove fruitful, ive found several coppers, canebrakes, kings, and corns....cheers, j
